Today it is the residence of Italy's President and the daily changing of the guards ceremony is still a popular attraction. The 17th century St. Peter's Square is the most beautiful square in the world and is situated in the centre of the Vatican, an autonomous Church State in the heart of Rome that also contains the imposing and breathtaking Petersdom, the largest Christian church in the world. Questar Video. VHS. The grandeur of the empire that changed the world is recreated through extraordinary computer modeling. Stand before the Colosseum in the first century, as it is built before your eyes. Step inside and see 50,000 Romans wildly cheering gladiators locked in duels to the death. Get a first-hand look at the lavish lifestyles of Rome and Pompeii theaters, baths, markets, parties and home life. Finally, witness recreations of the great fire of Rome and volcanic devastation of Pompeii. 60 minutes Review: "This hour-long video covers the grandeur of the ancient cities of Rome and Pompeii. By reconstructing the ancient buildings, the viewer is given a glimpse of daily life in the early part of the first millennium. Using a collage of sculpture, paintings, and footage from black-and-white films about the Roman Empire, narrator Edmund Purdon takes the viewer on a journey through two cities that are considered part of the basis of modern civilization. Ruins are displayed in their present state, and then are rebuilt on video so we can see exactly what each building was used for. In this way, we can see how early Romans lived--how they shopped, what their theaters were like, their baths, their eating and drinking habits, and even their bloody gladiator fights. Pompeii is introduced in the same manner, and we learn of its destruction--the earthquake and volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which killed over 2,000 people and buried the city until it was discovered in the mid-18th century. This video, part of the Great Cities of the Ancient World series, is a wonderful introduction for anyone curious about these important cities and a terrific foundation in the history of the Roman Empire". - $19.95 DVD All Regions Worldwide

A gorge-like labyrinth of walkways and subterranean chambers descends deep into the earth, formerly occupied by gladiators, slaves and caged animals ready for the slaughter. - $19.95 DVD All Regions Worldwide

DVD. Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. The area of land in which Rome's famous Forum Romanum is located was once an overgrown swampland. Many ancient relics are scattered around what was once the heart of the mighty Roman Empire that for so long dominated Europe. Since the beginning of the 3rd century, the majestic and impressive Septimus Severus Arch has maintained its function as an architectural expression of triumph. Within the interior of the Kurie with its two side pedestals, was the seat of the Roman senate in which there was room for 300 senators who had been democratically elected by the people. Huge buildings such as the Maxentius Basilica, named after the emperor, Constantine, are still recognizable today. It was only at the beginning of the 19th century that interest in ancient Rome returned with well-organized archaeological excavations. >From 1898 archaeologists worked their way through to the oldest and deepest foundations and with these new discoveries the ancient character of the Forum Romanum as the centre of the Roman Empire was returned to the glorious light of day. - $19.95 DVD All Regions Worldwide

DVD. Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. Around thirty kilometres east of Rome on a low plateau beneath the Tiburtine Mountains lie the ruins of Villa Adrianna, once the residence of Roman emperor, Hadrian, who had the stately residence built in the second century A.D. as a fine and luxurious country estate. Indeed, it is believed that the emperor himself participated in the planning of its construction and in each detailed aspect of the Villa's design. The Canopus is one of the most impressive areas of the Villa. The statue of Tiber is an example of the great skill of the Roman sculptors. The lengthy canal was developed between 125 and 133 A.D. Six Caryatids adorn the western side of the elegant row of columns that surround the Canopus water basin, creating a wonderfully picturesque setting. The thermal springs were built during the first construction stage of the Villa Adriana and are the oldest within the complex. Public baths were extremely important in the daily life of the Romans thus it is not surprising that the Villa possessed three thermal springs. In the 16th century archaeologists began to search for the emperor's lost residence but following its discovery many came only to plunder its treasures. In spite of this the unique splendour of the Roman Villa Adriana has thankfully been well preserved right up to the present day. - $29.95 DVD
