DVD. 7 Days. 52 Minutes. Egypt is a land of monumental temples, gigantic pyramids, the River Nile and the mysterious Sphinx; it embodies 5,000 years of history. Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta, and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra's spell. Cairo is Africa's largest city and the heart of the Arab world. Extreme poverty lives next to opulent wealth and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankhamen. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Giza. The Cheops Pyramid, the world's largest single construction, took 400,000 workers 20 years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square meters - the height of a 50 story skyscraper. In the middle of today's modern city of Luxor, known as the `Capital City Of The Pharaohs,' the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile. Not far away lies the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometers from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise. - $24.95 DVD All Regions Worldwide

DVD. Cosmos Global Documentaries. 52 Minutes. The Pyramids Of Gizeh are undoubtedly one of the most impressive and famous historic sites of ancient Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs, a land whose treasures are still, more than four thousand years after their construction, remarkable. A total of 2.3 million stone blocks form the largest pyramid, the Cheops, that was built in around 2560 B.C. on an elevated plateau on the edge of the western desert. The huge contours of the pyramids of Gizeh still dominate Cairo's surrounding landscape. Their dimensions symbolize timeless power and in red shining colours the sky announces the fall of dusk and highlights the dramatic, magical beauty of these monuments. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser rises up almost seventy metres above the ground and it was the world's first monumental stone building. Thus the Step Pyramid is often referred to as the `mother of all pyramids'. A narrow maze-like corridor leads from the outside world into the dark depths of the pyramid and the Pharaoh?s tomb. The flowering period of Thebes began in the Middle Empire when it became the new capital and lasted up until around the 14th century B.C. when Memphis regained its importance and influence. Today Thebes is closely connected with this town of death along the western shore of the Nile and the legendary Valley Of The Kings. In 1922 the discovery of the royal tomb of Tutenkhamen by British archaeologist, Howard Carter, was particularly important. After five years of excavation the scientists were successful and the spectacular treasures surpassed their highest expectations. Although Tutenkhamen died at the tender age of nineteen, his rule thus having little historical significance, the treasures in his tomb made him one of the most famous kings of Ancient Egypt. Today his legendary sarcophagus, that is made entirely of gold, is exhibited in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Up until now more than seventy tombs have been found in the neighbouring Valley Of The Queens. Princes who died at an early age were also buried there and the grave of Nefertari, the wife of Ramses the Second, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the valley. The Land of the Pharaohs is a fantastic and colourful journey into the intriguing depths of ancient history. - $24.95 DVD

DVD. Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. Abu Mena In Egypt, near to the Mariut See, is the most respected Christian pilgrimage destination of Abu Mena. Today, only its ruins remain. For more than 1700 years, the Kopts worshipped the holy martyr, Mena and in his honour, a Christian monastery was established here during the 3rd century. Due to the construction of several canals and also the distribution of water from the River Nile, the region is gradually being transformed into fertile agricultural land. However, Egypt's water supply system threatens to destroy the ruins of this historic sand-covered pilgrimage site. On the excavation site, the finely crafted stone reliefs of Abu Mena's submerged architecture offer a titillating promise of what lies beneath. Once a small town, today only a tranquil expanse of ruins and eroded walls are evidence of this once flourishing and lively centre for the pilgrims of early Christianity. The foundations and dimensions of its churches can still be discerned today. Should the ruins of this ancient place of pilgrimage be allowed to sink beneath the desert forever, the loss of this unique early Christian monument would be inestimable. - $19.95 DVD All Regions Worldwide

DVD. Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. Due to its remote location close to today's Sudanese border in Southern Egypt, Abu Simbel was unknown until 1813 when only the heads of the temple's colossal statues were visible above the sand. The breathtaking impression of its exterior also extends within where a magnificent hall with two rows of column-like statues leads into the depths of the temple. Abu Simbel is famous for its precise orientation toward the sun. Twice a year, the first rays of the morning sun shine down the entire length of the temple chamber and illuminate the rear wall of its innermost shrine. Various portrayals and descriptions of Egyptian gods can be found throughout, many of them portrayed with animal heads, such as hawks. Due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, Abu Simbel has been relocated from its original position on the banks of the Nile. Thanks to an international effort by UNESCO, and at a cost of 42 million dollars, the surface of the hill and the inner chambers were sectioned and reconstructed 64m higher up the valley, inside a concrete dome. The smaller Hathor Temple, dedicated to the wife of Ramses II, Princess Nefertari, was also saved in this way. Today, the great temples of Abu Simbel rise once again in all their former glory. - $19.95 DVD All Regions Worldwide

DVD. Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. Cairo's Alabaster Mosque dominates the skyline of the largest city in Africa. The imposing building is situated in the middle of the Citadel, a prominent fortress that was built in the 19th century. In 1830, Egyptian King Mohammad Ali Pasha ordered the construction of a mosque to strict Ottoman design. It is no accident that the external appearance of the Mosque is similar to that of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The minarets of the Alabaster Mosque rise 84 metres into the sky and have become an integral part of Cairo's silhouette. The impressive interior of the building is illuminated by an enormous chandelier, a gift from the French King, Louis Philippe The Fifth. Today, the light of the original three hundred and sixty-five oil lamps is powered by electricity, yet the great building still possesses a sublime atmosphere. The brilliance of the light augments the dimensions of the mosque to a breathtaking degree and the ceiling of the great prayer hall is over fifty metres high. Beneath the central cupola is the dignified tomb of King Mohammed Ali. The royal casket is made of the finest Italian marble and is decorated with Turkish motifs. Today, the Alabaster Mosque is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of Egyptian Islamic-Ottoman architecture of the 19th century. It has lost none of its former shining magnificence. - $19.95 DVD All Regions Worldwide

DVD. Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. On the desert border between Luxor and Abydos is the impressive Hathor Temple of Dendera, one of ancient Egypt's most important cities. The existence of the sanctuary for the goddess of love, music, dance and joy dates back to the Early Ancient Empire of 2000 years B.C. Facts relating to the later extension of the temple area ordered by the kings of the 12th Dynasty have also been preserved. Over the years the deciphering of numerous hieroglyphs has revealed numerous ancient fertility rites and also a comprehensive impression of Dendera. The design of the Hathor Temple originates from Late Ptolomaic times. Construction of the temple began in 30 B.C when the country was under Roman rule. The emperors Augustus and Tiberius finally completed the temple in 14 A.D. Architecturally, the monumental sanctuary of Dendera very much resembles other Egyptian temples in Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo. Being the last sovereign of the Ptolomaians, legendary Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, has been immortalized on the southern outer wall of the temple. The remarkable history of Dendera as an important place of worship can be traced back to a period that extends from antiquity to the golden years of the Roman Empire and to the roots of Christianity.
