Scale 1:2,300,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. The United States of America is a humongous travel attraction. Whether one is thinking of NYC or Disneyland, Hollywood or longhorn cattle, America is a fascinating place. ITMB specializes in mapping exotic travel destinations and in making even well-known places exotic. This is the first of a series of maps that we hope to publish on the USA in the years to come. We decided to start with two maps, East Half and West Half, because the size of the country and its complexity mitigated against doing one map for the entire half-continent. Even at the scale chosen, it was extremely difficult to portray all the parks, national monuments, battlefields, and touristic attractions that this fascinating country offers. One side covers the Atlantic seaboard from Maine to Florida, with insets of Washington, the Florida Keys, and Orlando/Disneyworld. The other side overlaps the previous side somewhat, but takes one as far west as Dallas and Omaha, and from the Canadian border to New Orleans and a bit of Mexico. Both sides show all Interstates (motorways) and toll roads (called Turnpikes), as well as all State highways and as many secondary roads as made sense to add. National and State heritage and conservation sites have been noted, as well as a tremendous number of parks and historic sites. - $17.95

Scale 1:1,000,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. This is the latest American regional map that ITMB has published. This one covers Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and parts of Idaho, New Mexico, and Arizona. It is, of course, the southern extension of the Canadian Rockies map through ‘Blue Sky’ Montana and ‘Mile High’ Denver. This is a double-sided map concentrating on roads and road quality, parks, touristic attractions, and urban areas. We feel that the state-by-state approach to mapping the USA just doesn’t work well. With today’s infrastructure and vehicular capability, one can pass through three or four states in a normal day’s drive. There is a place for state maps (Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, Texas) where size matters, but there is a real need for regionally-based maps as well. Rand is publishing an increasing number, but these are really extensions of city maps into surrounding local communities. It is a good idea, but we want to focus on the macro level, combining several states together into regional groupings, such as this one, the Deep South map that was released a couple of months ago, and the Northeast Corridor map that is coming out later this year. - $17.95

Scale 1:1,390,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. We are pleased to now be able to offer a map covering both sides of the important American/Mexican border areas. One has to always keep in mind that borders are artificial constraints dividing people into categories – Canadians on this side of the fence, Mexicans on that – but the reality of American life is that these political boundaries have to be very porous to enable trade and free movement of people who are closely related to each other. Of course, there are always cross-border frictions, but they are always solvable. This is not ‘just’ a map showing the border. Of course, it does that, as does our US/Canadian Border map. This map extends well into both the USA and Mexico to show the best of what each country has to offer within a reasonable driving distance. For instance, the US side extends north from San Diego all the way to Las Vegas eastward to Flagstaff, San Antonio, and Houston, showing touristic attractions across this vast area of America. Yes, the map shows the border and its many legal crossing points and no, this map won’t help people to enter the USA illegally. The Mexican side shows well-known and attractive venues such as Monterrey, Ciudad Victoria, Torreon, and Chihuahua, as well as the northern portion of Baja California. The famous Copper Canyon railway route from Los Mochis to Cuauhtemoc is shown as is the oldest urban area settled by Europeans in the USA and no, it isn’t Jamestown, It’s Presidio, Texas! This is a map for exploring, and whether that means in an east-west routing inside one country, or a north-south inter-mingling remains the purview of the user. Mexico is a lovely country just recovering from an extremely troubling drug-inspired war. Travel to Mexico is increasing as peace returns to a troubled land and this map makes it possible to enjoy the best of two countries. - $17.95

Scale 1:1,000,000. International Travel Maps edition. This map is including adjacent US states and bordering Canada. We started it wanting to do map of just New England, but that will have to be a future title. By the shape of the USA, the New England States fill most of one side of the map, but New York City and Philadelphia are included as well as goodly portion of New York State. The second side covers the rest of the state, plus all of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and most of Ohio, West Virginia and the northern portion of Virginia. In terms of cities, Cincinnati is at the bottom left of the sheet and Richmond at the bottom right, with Detroit at upper left and Albany at upper right. The value of this map for visitors is that is covers a reasonably comprehensive portion of the USA, stretching as it does from northern Maine to south of Washington, DC. Thus, for someone driving from Canada or flying into Boston or NYC, this map offers the ability to travel using a sectional maps of a region, rather than having to rely on a variety of state maps for political entities that are geographically quite small. The map shows motorway interstates in blue and tries to show every interchange, main highways, and significant secondary roads that connect. Although place name inclusion is extensive, at this scale it is impossible to note all villages, especially in the vicinity of major urban areas. Parks, higher education institutes, skis areas, battlefields, airports, rail lines, and touristic attractions are all shown. - $17.95

Scale 1:1,000,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. This map, covering the populous, and popular, west coast of America, is a real winner. The map stretches from Vancouver, BC, to Tijuana, Mexico, but in practical terms is an excellent map of Washington, Oregon, and California from the Pacific Ocean eastwards to the Rocky Mountains. It notes major highways and motorways, of course, and secondary routes linking the communities together. Touristic sites are highlighted and many wilderness campsites noted. Beaches all along the coast are noted. The map has been updated, but we have retained the same ISBN and price for ease of marketing. This is an extremely popular title. - $17.95

Scale 1:1,000,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. The USA is a series of regions. One of the best known is New England; another is the Pacific Northwest, which is generally accepted consists of the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, with maybe a tiny portion of British Columbia on the north and a bit of California/Nevada on the south. We selected 1:1M scale to represent the region as a double-sided map on waterproof paper. It starts in Vancouver in the north and goes to Eureka and Redding in the south. Side 2 includes a fair amount of Montana, as must be expected, given the shape of Idaho. The easternmost border of Idaho is in a direct line with both Bozeman and Great Falls, MT. This is an excellent travel map for the region. The scale used opens up the grandeur of this vast expanse of land, showing all highways and secondary routes, and noting significant sites for visitors to explore, whether that would be Squaw Creek Canyon, Winthrop, WA, or the Old Perpetual Geyser in Oregon. I’m afraid that space constraints limited insets to Seattle, but hundreds of parks and wilderness reserves are included, as well as Interstate rest areas, campsites, beaches, and of course Coeur de Lion (Heart of the Lion), since corrupted to Coeur d’Alene. - $17.95

Scale 1:1,000,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. We call the map the Atlantic States guardedly for obvious reasons. First, the northeastern Atlantic States are missing and second, Florida's Caribbean coastline is included. Also, to cover an area so long, we had to go further inland than 'just' the coast, so all of Pennsylvania and West Virginia are included. The area of coverage of side A is Philadelphia/Pittsburg south to Augusta and Charleston. Side B continues south to the southernmost portion of Florida and west to Panama City. Inset maps of Orlando and Miami are included on this side as well. Both road and rail connections are shown, and distances between communities shown. Places of touristic interest are included, albeit suitable to the scale. An extensive place name index is included. - $17.95

Scale 1:900,000. International Travel Maps edition. The four southwestern American states of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah fit nicely into a region that also fits well as a map sheet while keeping the scale reasonable for showing detail. I will hasten to add that the northern portions of California and Nevada are not included, as this would have reduced the scale considerably, so please regard this as state areas south of Sacramento and Sparks/Reno. Regardless, this is a very interesting part of the USA, and a popular touristic destination. We have used a thinner paper on this edition, making the map easier to fold and hopefully easier to use. Motorways, major highways, connecting roads, significant local roads are shown in good detail, as are wilderness campsites, touristic attractions, and accommodations away from major urban areas. This is a regional map and very useful for those planning an extensive trip. ITMB also publishes state maps of California, Arizona, and Utah in expanded scales for those wishing improved details of somewhat smaller geographic entities. - $17.95

Scale 1:3,500,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. The United States is the third most populous country in the world, and has the most developed road, rail, and air networks in the world. As such, it is very difficult to map as a country. It is also, due to its unusual shape, impossible to show on a map without including a large portion of Canada and Mexico, which we've tried to downplay so the focus remained on the USA. Due to the size of the USA, I would regard this map as being a main-roads approach to presenting a country. We put on, then removed, railway lines and airports, as the artwork became so crowded with data that it was difficult to see anything. The USA is also a country of villages, rather than large cities, and although we have tried to note as many smaller centres as possible, the map has to be readable and so we had to select which urban areas to include without over-crowding the artwork. If anyone feels a pressing need for the inclusion of some town we omitted, we will do our best to fit it into the next edition. We were able to make room for major parks and preserves, and major attractions, such as the Disney complex close to Orlando, and Gettysburg and a hundred other important sites, but I'm sure some were missed. Space; there is never enough space! This map anchors our growing American series, which now exceeds 30 titles, and we are very happy it is back in print. This is a very important country, with a rich history that continues to unfold in the most American way possible via hourly tweets and deadlocked Congresses and much passion and fervor and mumbling and grumbling. It may seem frustrating as a country at times, but the world would be a lot less interesting without all the thunder and fury emanating from the USA. Use the map and go exploring! - $17.95

Scale 1:1,700,000. Size 27"x39". International Travel Maps edition. This is also a new title for ITMB, replacing our former map called USA West Half. This map does not cover the same area exactly, nor is it at the same scale, but more importantly, its purpose has changed. Travel in the USA is changing. The younger generation is increasingly travelling by train and bus to get from place to place, as airfares rise and the cost of a car becomes more expensive. At first, we thought of doing an AMTRAK/VIA Rail map of North America, but the resultant scale would have reduced detail to an unacceptable level, so we opted to convert the concept of a map of half a country into a map thematically attempting to concentrate on travel by rail around at least a large portion of America. The motorways, highways, and touristic attractions are still shown, but the passenger service rail lines a shown prominently. This is a double-sided north-south map, with side one showing from Vancouver south to Red Bluff in California and east to Casper, Wyoming. The other side covers from north of Sacramento, California to the Mexican border and from the Pacific shore east to Denver or El Paso. This covers a goodly portion of the USA at a better scale than our previous edition, with the same attention to touristic detail as one the earlier map. - $17.95

Scale 1:2,500,000. International Travel Maps edition. ITMB is renowned for releasing innovative titles that have never been done before. Not only are most of our country maps unique, in that no other publisher bothers to do them, so with North America we’re experimenting with maps that either have never been done before, or have been done without due thought. Thus we have released the first serious travel atlas to historic Route 66, a new highways atlas to the entire Alaska/Yukon/NWT region (another first, never before attempted). Now we have completed a map that is long overdue. The Canadian/US border is the longest single border in the world between two countries. It stretches from the southern end of Vancouver Island eastward to Nova Scotia/New Brunswick, has dozens upon dozens of border crossings and stretches for about 5,000 kilometers or is it miles? Regardless, it is long, but more importantly, since 1815, it has been promoted as the longest ‘undefended’ border in the world. Naturally, there is a strict border patrol/surveillance on both sides of the border area, but there are no troops, no navy, no air force operations on either side. It is unprecedented in world history to have such a long border, free of military supervision. This map is double-sided and shows the border states and their provincial counterparts, starting with British Columbia and Washington/Idaho/Montana for about 150 miles on either side of the actual border, and carries on eastward through the Prairie/Midwest region, before dipping south to encircle the Great Lakes region, before terminating with New York City at the southern extreme and most of New Brunswick/Maine in the northeast. The purpose of the map is to show the true nature of a region where more than 100,000,000 people live; the highways binding them together, the major cities as insets (Long Island, Boston region, Chicago,Toronto central, Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria), the many border crossings and the artificiality of the border. This is a map showing how easy it is to travel from North Dakota to Manitoba (for instance), or how easy it is to make a Great Lakes round trip. This map spans a continent and follows the route taken by my ancestor, Alexander Mackenzie, who first crossed the continent in 1793 on foot and mapped the routes followed by all settlers heading westward for the next century, including those Johnny-come-latelies Lewis and Clark, who only followed well-trodden trapping routes made by the Northwest Fur Company traders a generation earlier. - $17.95
