CAMBODIA – The kingdom of Angkor Wat

Cambodia, aka Kingdom of Cambodia is situated in the region of South-East Asia. It is located on the south side of the Indo-China peninsula. It has a land area of around 70,000 miles. The border areas are Thailand, Laos which cover the north and Vietnam, Gulf of Thailand from east and south. The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh and the currency of the kingdom is Riels.

Cambodia has a population of 15 million, the major religion there is Theravada Buddhism which is followed by a major part of the population and the minorities include Vietnamese, Chams, Chinese and hill tribes too. The head of government Hun Sen has ruled Cambodia for over 25 years. Cambodia is actually a parliamentary monarchy with Norodom Sihamony, a monarch chosen as head of State.

The major provinces in Cambodia include Phnom Penh, Kandal, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang and Siem Reap. The major language followed here is Khmer. Although a lot of older Cambodians still prefer French, it is also taught as a medium of instructions in schools that are funded by the French Government. However, as English is expanding globally, it has replaced French in terms of the most used language.

The tourism of Cambodia is the second largest source of money followed by textiles. Cambodia is globally renowned for the temple complex of Angkor Wat, the beaches in Sihanoukville and the capital city Phnom Penh are the main attractions.
