The water has a high salt content and few creatures are able to survive within its waters. However, numerous rare species of water fowl can be found along its banks. Salt water shrimp and brine shrimp are the staple diet of the birdlife that inhabits the Great Salt Lake and it is only in the tributaries of the lake that fish are to be found. Due to the loss of its natural outflows, the Great Salt Lake lost its water by evaporation, thus creating its saltiness. The lake's four tributaries carried various minerals from the surrounding mountains into the lake and its salt content further increased. Depending on the water level, the salt content in some sections of the lake can reach up to twenty seven percent, only the Dead Sea contains more salt. The Great Salt Lake is a remarkable and unique lake and its origin and unusual beauty make it a true miracle of nature!

Lake Powell was created due to the construction of the Glen Canyon Reservoir. Beyond the 216 metre high concrete dam, a unique labyrinth of deep canyons whose beauty has been compared to that of the Grand Canyon, now lies underwater. However, it was not only the landscape and the environment that was affected by the construction of the damn, early Native Indian settlements were also lost. Most of the 3,000 kilometre shoreline of Lake Powell consists of rock walls that are in bright contrast to the deep blue water of the lake. More than 90 neighboring canyons and smaller ravines have also been covered by the waters of the dam. For many years, Rainbow Bridge was only known to the local Indians and for the Navajo, the natural monument located above the waters of Bridge Creek is a sacred place. Due to its incredible height of 94 metres and its span of 88 metres, the majestic arch resembles a petrified rainbow. At dusk, the spectacular colors of the landscape are one of the most memorable experiences at Lake Powell until the water and surrounding scenery become covered by the dark of night.

Canyonlands is a national park of the same name in the south east of Utah where numerous canyons and steep river valleys seem to touch the horizon. The Valley Of Fire is situated in the oldest national park in Nevada and is also the location of Fire Canyon. Approximately eighty kilometres from Las Vegas the environment here provides a healthy and relaxing atmosphere compared to the neon lifestyle of the biggest gambling paradise in the world. When the Rocky Mountains began to develop more than ten million years ago and the Earth's crust started to shift upwards, the Colorado Plateau formed and thus the smaller Paunsaugunt Plateau, the geological foundation of Bryce Canyon.
