Lake Powell was created due to the construction of the Glen Canyon Reservoir. Beyond the 216 metre high concrete dam, a unique labyrinth of deep canyons whose beauty has been compared to that of the Grand Canyon, now lies underwater. However, it was not only the landscape and the environment that was affected by the construction of the damn, early Native Indian settlements were also lost. Most of the 3,000 kilometre shoreline of Lake Powell consists of rock walls that are in bright contrast to the deep blue water of the lake. More than 90 neighboring canyons and smaller ravines have also been covered by the waters of the dam. For many years, Rainbow Bridge was only known to the local Indians and for the Navajo, the natural monument located above the waters of Bridge Creek is a sacred place. Due to its incredible height of 94 metres and its span of 88 metres, the majestic arch resembles a petrified rainbow. At dusk, the spectacular colors of the landscape are one of the most memorable experiences at Lake Powell until the water and surrounding scenery become covered by the dark of night.
