The Viet people are friendly and the country is both scenic and safe. These are essential ingredients to having a successful touristic industry, and Vietnam certainly has worked very hard to create a travel experience that is enjoyable and affordable.
This is an excellent map of the country, printed on plastic for durability, but also to cope with the high humidity experienced in Vietnam for much of the year. With this edition, we are trying something very different the cover picture is of women in the salt pans, piling millions of crystals of salt from evaporation pans.
This is hardly a "normal" cover pic, but it is very graphic and, somehow, very Vietnamese. This is the 7th updating of the country since 1993.

Vietnam's royal city is the site of the former royal palace, the citadel that was so hard-fought-over during the Tet Offensive, and the site of many of the tombs of former emperors. As such, it is a prime touristic attraction. Da Nang, formerly best-known as the location of China Beach, is the most Westernized city in Vietnam, and a vacation resort town for long-term stays. Hoi An is a nearby town and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Combine all of this with the Central Highlands region of Vietnam from Thanh Hoa south to Tuy Hoa and add in all of southern Laos and one has a successful map of an interesting portion of Vietnam, at a scale much better than that of any other map. This is the link that joins the northern and southern portions of Vietnam, including those parts of the famous ho Chi Minh Trail.

I first visited Hanoi in 1992, as an official guest of the government. That’s how I met Lan, who had been sent to the airport to greet me. The rest is history 22 visits to Hanoi later, I know the city fairly well, but every visit shows interesting changes. The bicycle culture has been replaced by the motorbike culture and the city’s population has risen to the five million mark.
This edition focuses on the ‘old town’ area south of West Lake, and comprehensively catalogues newly-widened streets, major shopping areas, touristic sites, even bus stops. The map does not, unfortunately, show the new elevated rapid transit line, which was stalled for lack of financial resources when we did the research for this edition.
We decided not to include it until it was finally completed, years behind schedule, so it will be on the next edition. As of March, 2019, it still wasn’t open, but looked as if progress was being made. The other side of the map is an excellent rendering of the hinterland surrounding Hanoi – Ha Long Bay, Sa Pa, the Chinese border, Vinh, and Hue.
This is a much more detailed map to use for locating touristic attractions than the map of the entire country. As a last aside, please note the cover. There is a small grey-clad figure crossing the bridge to the temple on an island in Sword Lake. That’s Johnny, and that’s me trying to keep up with him. We really DO ground-truth our maps!

Saigon, renamed Ho Chi Minh City after 1975, is the economic powerhouse of Vietnam. The central core lies alongside the Saigon River and is the focus of most interest for visitors. The city has doubled or tripled in population since the 1970s. As a result, the city has spread far beyond its civic boundaries, known as Districts.
District One contains the early town centre and French colonial architecture, and most of the hotels and restaurants. The international airport is included at the top of the page, and the motorway leading to the north is on the right. As a new feature to this popular title, we have added a detailed map of the southern portion of Vietnam to the reverse side.
This includes the Mekong Delta, one of the most interesting areas of the country, the Da Lat mountainous ‘hill town’ region, the border crossings to Cambodia, the beach resorts of Nha Trang, and the historic market town of Hoi An, south of Da Nang. The map also includes inset maps of Can Tho, in the middle of the Delta, of Da Nang, and of Hoi An, as well as a detailed inset of the resort island of Phu Quoc. This is an extremely useful map for anyone touring the country – attractive, informative, and easy to use.
