Moroccan

  1. $285.00 set + $12.50 p&h + $32.50 foreign delivery

    Item Code : AUDO3933

A Basic Course In Moroccan, Audio CD Course.
Includes 17 audio CD discs ( = 18 hours) and a 395-page text. This course was developed by the world famous linguist Richard Harrell and is a seminal work. This course teaches the Arabic of the educated urban population of northwestern Morocco, which includes the cities of Fez, Rabat, and Casablanca. You can use it throughout Morocco with some allowance for local dialects. The text uses Roman alphabet transcriptions of Arabic words and phrases, and includes a glossary and index of all grammatical points covered in the lessons. Presented in Latinate (Roman) transcription, it is carefully designed to present vocabulary and grammatical points in a useful, cumulative order. After completion of the course, the user will have learned all of the essential information about the structure of Moroccan Arabic and be prepared to continue through real-life practice. Each of the 130 lessons consists of a text where a small number of phrases and sentences illustrate grammatical points, grammatical notes that provide an explanation of new grammatical material introduced in the text, exercises and drills of new grammar and vocabulary, and vocabulary lists of the new words introduced in each lesson. Each lesson leads the student to a thorough understanding of the structure of Moroccan Arabic. The course also offers 97 short, conversational dialogs that challenge the student in a variety of social situations. I have personally used this course and believe that it is excellent. Probably the best course out there, by far. And you need it if you want to converse in Morocco in the native language. Unfortunately, it's not possible to hold even the simplest of conversations by relying on a skimpy little phrasebook. Go slow and methodically and this course will be a joy to use.

Conceived to be a practical reference grammar for those who may have basic skills in Moroccan, this volume contains a short reintroduction to the phonology of Moroccan, and then continues to deal more in depth with the morphology and syntax of this particular Arabic dialect. It concludes with an interesting Appendix containing annotated texts in urban Moroccan. In not using Arabic script, transcribed for the English-speaking student for easier comprehension, A Short Reference Grammar of Moroccan teaches the spoken language of the urban people of the northwestern part of Morocco, especially Fez, Rabat, and Casablanca. A Dictionary of Moroccan.
Moroccan-English, English-Moroccan. By Richard Harrell and Harvey Sobelman. 526 pages. Hardcover. A Dictionary of Moroccan complements A Basic Course in Moroccan (text and CDs) and A Short Reference Grammar of Moroccan. It presents, in an impressive range, the core vocabulary of everyday life in Morocco--from the kitchen to the mosque, from the hardware store to the natural world of plants and animals. It contains myriad examples of usage, including formulaic phrases and idiomatic expressions. Understandable throughout the nation, it is based primarily on the standard dialect of Moroccans from the cities of Fez, Rabat, and Casablanca. All Arabic citations are in an English transcription, making it invaluable to English-speaking non-Arabists, travelers, and tourists--as well as being an important resource tool for students and scholars in the Arabic language-learning field.
