Catherine and John stay in a seedy motel on the main island, Tarawa, where they experience a 1st birthday party in a village. They learn why you shouldn't eat the fish and how to make toddy, a coconut drink. In another village, they see how the people live and are honoured with a feast complete with special dance performances. Catherine joins a women's craft group and they both enjoy the nun's Sunday lunch.
