It is certainly one of the most beautiful waterways in Europe for boating. Rarely is a canal, both in the historical sense, as well as in technical terms, of such interest. In its time it was a groundbreaking marvel. Additionally it leads through some of the most beautiful and scenic countryside and offers recreation and pleasure, not only for charter-boat travelers, but also for hikers or bikers along its banks. We can only hope that this natural and technological gem remains intact for many generations to come.

Four long avenues of mighty stone known as `alignments' extend across eight kilometres of scenic terrain. The Kerzerho Stones are one of the most splendid alignments in Carnac. They consist of more than eleven hundred stones and cover an area of almost two kilometres. But what significance did this formation have with its Neolithic creators and how were they able to transport these massive stones? The stones will probably never reveal their secrets but many historians and archaeologists believe that they were connected with some kind of religious belief. The area around Carnac also contains numerous intriguing Dolmen, a series of vertical stones that support a large slab, a kind of stone table. Along the northern border of Plouharnel Village there is a fine example of this unique construction that dates back to the Stone Age, the Dolmen of Rondonssec. The large number of Dolmen indicates that the region was once not only of great astronomical importance but was also used as a burial site. It is not known who was buried here but they may have been tribal and religious leaders as well as those who had made an important contribution to the well-being of the tribe. For several centuries the tranquil and mysterious atmosphere of this place has fascinated all those who have experienced it. The megaliths of Carnac are masterpieces of prehistoric architecture and grand monuments that have survived time itself.

Les Baux de Provence Surrounded by the attractive provincial mountain landscape of the Alpilles there is a romantic mediaeval town high on a rock, Les Baux-De-Provence, located 400 metres above the Crau Valley. The historic origins of the village date back to the first millennium A.D. Located in the lower, busier part of the town, the Saint Vincent Church dates back to the 12th century and it is an atmospheric setting for famous Christmas performances such as the Shepherds? Midnight Mass. Archaeological discoveries and precious works of art are to be found in the Mus?e D?Histoire De Baux that also serves as the entrance to the upper part of the town. In times of freedom the country's finest troubadours gathered in the town's now ruined castle. Immortalized by a monument, the farmer poet, Charles Rieu, is considered to have been a fine exponent of this age-old tradition. However, in1483 the art of the troubadour grew silent and was replaced by the sound of battle when the powerful catapults of Ludwig The Eleventh destroyed large sections of the castle. Like no other village in the Alpilles, Les Baux-De-Provence has long been the centre of this region's glorious history.

In the 15th century the sleepy village developed into a prosperous sail-making centre until the arrival of successful competition and lower prices. The village owes its popularity to the old architecture and dark grey granite buildings that lie at the historic heart of Locronan. The sudden loss of prosperity meant that there was insufficient money either to maintain the buildings or to construct new ones. Thus a walk through the picturesque village is like a fascinating journey back to the time of the French Renaissance. Famous film directors such as Roman Polanski have used the village's unique scenery as a backdrop to their movies. With all the evocative ambience of this wonderful place and far away from the noise of motor vehicles, it's like being in another world.

The Louvre in Paris is, literally, a palace of art as for more than two centuries this former castle of the Kings of France has contained one of the greatest and most famous art museums in the world. The origins of the Louvre date back to the 13th century. Originally, the building resembled a simple fortress until King Carl The Fifth made the building his personal residence. In 1546 the French architect Pierre Lescot received an order from King Franz The First to build a brand new Renaissance palace. Franz The First was also responsible for the fact that a certain Andrea Del Sarto purchased the first art collection for the monarch while visiting Italy. Thus, masterpieces such as Leonardo Da Vinci?S world famous painting, the Mona Lisa, became the property of the French King. One of the most famous and treasured paintings in the Louvre is the perfectly formed statue of Aphrodite, better known as the Venus De Milo. In addition to various collections from the Oriental, Greek, Roman and Etruscan periods, the Egyptian section is particularly impressive. Each year six million visitors pour into the former royal residence of the Louvre, majestic home to much of the world's most treasured works of art.

It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of `Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta;the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dant?s is said to have entered the Abb? Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres.

Its mood and elegance attract tourists, millionaires, ship owners, sportsmen, film- and popstars. The casino of Monte Carlo - which was engineered in 1862 by the architect of the Paris Opera, Garnier - is the most famous of its kind in the whole world. The Formula 1 race, when the narrow streets of the city are turned into a racetrack, is also a large event. Among other things circus and opera festivals, art exhibitions, football matches and tennis tournaments await visitors. The Oceanographic Museum, founded by Prince Albert I. and at a time led by Cousteau, is the world's largest such institute. In the Jardin Exotique the visitors may see tropical plants, cactuses and pine trees. The guards parade in front of the palace in snow-white uniforms. The buildings of the old city reflect a Renessaince charm and a zest for life. The sea is dark blue in the arms of the large rocks, while in the docks of La Condamine white luxury yachts are floating on the water.

DVD. Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. An 80 metre high mound of granite in Normandy, Le Mont-Saint -Michel, with its historic buildings is like something from a fairy tale. Powerful fortifications surround both the small town and the abbey at top of the rock, remnants of Mont-Saint- Michel's dramatic past. The three-storey monastery in the northern section, La Merveille, is one of the finest examples of French Late Gothic design. In the middle of the 10th century Benedictine monks from Saint Wandrille took over this mountain pilgrimage that soon developed into an important pilgrimage destination. During the Hundred Years? War between France and France the monastery increasingly grew to resemble a fortress and the historic development of the town is exhibited in numerous museums. The repairs, extensions and decoration of the Benedictine took several hundred years thus creating a unique monument to the history of French construction that united various talented artists and architects of various epochs.

It is also a place of contrast with all the pulsating life of an international city mixed with the rich Mediterranean flair of the south. The magnificent Promenade Des Anglais, named after the resort's former large contingent of English visitors, was built during the19th century. The historical centre of the city, Vielle Ville, has become the home of Arabian immigrants, thus couscous features prominently on the menu. The old fish market is the most beautiful on the entire C?te D`Azur and its traditional displays of seafood are a feast to the eye. The Russian Tsars also spent much time in Nice and in around 1900 a Russian Orthodox church was built. With its six eye-catching onion-shaped domes, it was designed by the Russian architect, Preobrajensky, and is the most beautiful example of its kind in the western hemisphere. The foundations of the building were designed in the shape of a Greek crucifix and the interior features a remarkable collection of Russian icons. A good way to visit numerous places of interest is by taking a journey on a small sightseeing train known as the Azur Express. Just outside Nice there are some remarkable Roman ruins and a villa on the excavated site contains the Matisse Museum that features each of the famous artist's sculptures. Nice is more than `nice' - joie de vivre never had it so good!
