Around 1,000 A.D., the ancestors of the Shoshone Indians settled in this region, their largest village having been located at what is known today as Furnace Creek. One of the most famous and certainly most photographed areas in Death Valley is the hill range of Zabriskie Point, undoubtedly the most beautiful and spectacular observation point in the unique rock and desert landscape of Southwest California. Scotty's Castle was the inspiration of two men from Chicago, an insurance millionaire named Albert Johnson and a legendary gold digger, Walter Scott. During the 1920s, they built a magnificent hacienda that cost over 1.5 million dollars and today it provides an atmospheric impression of the realization of an incredible dream. Even today, the timeless and breathtaking scenery of Death Valley continues to turn the famous myths and legends of the `Wild West' into amazing reality.

The uniqueness of this wonderful rock landscape was recognized many years ago, thus this Californian national park is the second oldest nature reserve in the United States. At Yosemite Falls, the steep rocks tower up more than 700 metres and it is the park's highest and also most impressive waterfall. The surrounding forests are also attractive but the most famous sight in this region are the 9 waterfalls of Yosemite Valley. Up until the beginning of the great Californian Gold Rush, around the middle of the 19th century, this unique mountain landscape was mostly untouched and those in search of gold headed for Merced River. Mono Lake is the greatest crater lake in the world and although it is one of the oldest lakes in North America, its water is three times as salty as the sea, it is far from dead. Mysteriously and full of bizarre formations, white tuff rocks rise out of the water. Their origin is a remarkable natural wonder. The combination of both lake water and natural springs creates a white limestone sediment of calcium carbonate that is the main constituent of the tuff stones. Both the Bodie Hills, close to the northern part of the lake, and the eastern Anchorite Hills are millions of years old volcanic mountains with enchanting rock formations. Sometimes it seems as though the rock possesses a mysterious inner power. In the summer months, 50,000 seagulls flock around the lake in which small salt crayfish and saltwater flies are food to millions of birds of passage.
