Great Railway Journeys: St. Petersburg to Tashkent Railroad Video.
Acorn Media Publications.

Natalia
Makarova, the Kirov’s prima ballerina who defected in 1970, returns to her
beloved country to take the Bolshoi Express. Beginning in her
birthplace, St. Petersburg, the huge steam engines pull luxury tourist
coaches, lovingly restored to their original state, through to Tashkent,
where Natalia is reunited with her oldest and dearest friend.
During the two-week trip, she visits Moscow, where she is saddened
by the strong Western influences, and Volgograd (Stalingrad), where in the
vast war memorial she is haunted by her tragic family history. In
contrast, Natalia goes sturgeon fishing on the Volga and visits the blue
domes and minarets of romantic Samarkand. 57 minutes.

Africa's Champagne Trains - Travel Video. Goldhil Home Media.
2 Volume Set.
Mention Africa, and one imagines dense jungles, endless high plains,
spectacular deserts and wild animals in the millions. But Africa is
also home to the most luxurious passenger
trains
in the world. They are known as "Africa's Champagne Trains" and
feature unparalleled comfort, service and scenery. Even the famed
"Orient Express" takes a backseat to these extraordinary trains.
This outstanding video collection captures their opulence you take a
railroading safari across Africa's
magnificent and mysterious countryside.
The Blue Train
The Blue Train spans over 1000 miles of African interior, between the
cities of Cape Town and Pretoria, South Africa, traveling through some of
the most spectacular scenery in all of Africa. On each journey, only
84 passengers are served and pampered by a staff of 27 and enjoy railroad
coaches reminiscent of an exclusive country cottage, complete with marble
baths and gold-plated fixtures. Compartments also feature high-tech
televisions, cell phones, sound systems and computer ports. The Blue
Train is simply one of the most lavish railroading experiences anywhere.
The Pride of Africa-Rovos Rail
Using fully restored vintage railroad cars and powered mostly by steam
locomotives, the trains of Rovos Rail represent one of the world's premier
luxury lines. Passenger compartments are huge, only two to three per
coach, and feature mahogany paneling, etched glass lamps. Full-sized
bathrooms and even freestanding beds. From spectacular Victoria
Falls in Zimbabwe, The Pride of Africa travels across southern Africa and
passes near dozens of national parks and game preserves where the
extraordinary animals of Africa can be experienced up close.

Great Railway Journeys: South Africa - Capetown to the Lost City -
Railroad Video. Acorn Video Publications.

Rian
Malan, a journalist and award winning author, takes a journey that paints
a timeless portrait of this remarkable country and its people. Rian
travels on a luxury steam train across the Great Karoo, a wilderness
accounting for two-thirds of South Africa’s land surface. From there
he goes through the high Veldt in the third class carriage of the
Trans-Natal Express.
He ventures into the dangerous Drakenberg mountains in an
armored personnel carrier and meets the descendants of Mahatma Gandhi.
After a short stopover in Durban, a city of childhood memories, Rian moves
onto Johannesburg and then to the final destination, The Lost City, a
billion rand mirage where he contemplates his future as a white South
African. 57 minutes.

Great Railway Journeys: Hong Kong to Ulan Bataar - Railroad Video.
Acorn Media Publications.

With
influenza and a Chinese phrase book, Clive Anderson makes a somewhat
apologetic start of his journey, but he is quickly into his stride,
cracking English jokes to bemused fellow travelers. Crossing China,
Clive is surprised to find it just as commercially minded as Hong Kong.
At Mao’s birthplace he talks to a former Red Guard and creates a stir in
Shanghai’s People’s Park, where Chinese locals serenade him with hits from
The Sound of Music.
Later Clive joins the Trans-Siberian Express where he encounters
the Queen's Messengers carrying their diplomatic bags to Ulaanbaatar.
Here in Mongolia, as a matter of economic policy, nomadic tribesmen are
being encouraged to play the stock market! 57 minutes.

Great Railway Journeys: Karachi to the Khyber Pass - Railroad Video.
Acorn Media Publications.

Mark
Tully, the BBC correspondent, brings a lifetime of experience in India to
this 1,050-mile journey on the spectacular rail network built by the
British in the 1800’s. Leaving Karachi on the mail train to Lahore,
Mark makes a diversion north across the Sindh desert on a steam-hauled
goods train, then through the magnificent Bolan Pass via 20 tunnels, each
an incredible feat of engineering, and on to Quetta, which predates
Greco-Roman civilization.
Returning on the Khyber Mail, he continues to Rawalpindi, and then
on to Peshawar, where the line through the Khyber Pass, closed since
Russian occupation in 1982, is about to reopen. It’s an exciting journey
filled with exotic bazaars and good old-fashioned military pomp. 57
minutes.

National Geographic: The Great Indian Railway - Travel Video.
A puffing steam train
climbs into the
Himalaya, a rolling rumble echoes over the holy waters of the Ganges, an
astonishing five million
commuters rush daily through the Bombay Victoria Terminus---join National
Geographic as we journey on one of the world's largest railway systems.
Since 1953, India's railway has been a unifying force. Not
only does it physically link distant regions, it also connects the myriad
of castes, languages, and religions that comprise India. It's a rich
history, riding the sumptuous "Palace on Wheels" through Rajasthan or the
"toy train" to Darjeeling. But sadly, the age of steam is dying.
At the Black Beauty contest, the beloved steam engines are admired for the
last time.
From the driver in the steaming locomotive to the station master in
the sleepy village, from the family traveling to a wedding to the
commuters in the large cities, this great institution reflects the country
itself. Many are the faces, and varied are the stories, on "The
Great Indian Railway". 115
minutes. "A beautiful video
gently narrated with a lot of love. Have a handkerchief ready for
the finale." Arthur Lynn |

Great Train Journeys of Australia - Travel Video.
Boxed Set of 5 VHS Video Cassettes.
From the populated coastline cities
of
Melbourne
and Brisbane to the most treacherous and isolated outposts Down Under,
Great Train Journeys of Australia captures the enormous breadth and
variety of both the Australian landscape and the identity of its people.
More than just a window on this vast and often quirky nation, the trains
themselves take on the essence of their paths, making each trip an
experience in itself. Whether you want to discover the excitement of
Sydney, explore the rich history of the Aboriginal culture, or
experience the mysticisms of the terrain, climb aboard for an
unforgettable adventure. Run time: 4 hours, 10 minutes.
Customer Comment:
"I tell you these
video's were so great that I would go to Australia twice just to be able
to ride all the trains I might miss on only one trip. But having only
one life to live and only one trip to be able to afford, these video's
did the job for me. To be able to track the area I will visit as to
which mode of travel I should take was accomplished by having these
great tools. Australia is so vast that one needs to plan carefully to
see an area well. The train travel experience is well understood after
watching these lovely video's. Once again having these video's in ones
library is like having a vacation in a bottle. You can take the trip
anytime you want to with your VCR. Great for train buffs and anyone who
wants a relaxing viewing experience. Let the kids get an education and
not even leave the house. Glad I invested these will be a joy in my home
for years to come!" |
