Rick Steves' Spain and Portugal 2000-2007 - Travel Video.  DVD.

Six Shows: 3 hours, closed captioned, NTSC format, all region compatible.

Here's where we'll take you...

The Majesty of Madrid — Madrid is studded with riches from its glory days. We tour the lavish Royal Palace, enjoy art-packed museums, and look deep into Picasso's greatest masterpiece. Experiencing Madrid at its fun-loving best, we're mesmerized by flamenco dancers and munch on pigs' ears. Then, for a dose of Spain's dramatic history, we side-trip to El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen.

Highlights of Castille: Toledo and Salamanca — Castille sparkles with Roman Segovia, walled Avila, student-filled Salamanca, and holy Toledo! We marvel at El Greco, pop some explosive pickles, and ramble Spain's most awe-inspiring medieval walls. Then, just for fun, we drop in on a bachelorette party with local troubadours, slice and savor tasty jamon, stroll with the crowd, and grab a front-row seat to enjoy Europe's most enchanting square.

Sevilla and Andalusia — Sevilla is the flamboyant city of Carmen and Don Juan. It's where bullfighting is still politically correct and where little girls dream of growing up to become flamenco dancers. Sevilla has soul — and we feel it in its lacy Moorish palace, massive cathedral, lavish royal tombs, labyrinthine Jewish quarter, and its people-filled streets. After munching tasty tapas, we head south for Andalusia's ultimate whitewashed hilltown, Arcos de la Frontera.

Spain's Costa del Sol — Here in southern Spain, we explore Granada's Alhambra — Europe's last and greatest Moorish palace, and we soak up the sun on a Costa del Sol beach. As we check out Gibraltar, a last vestige of the British Empire, we feed the legendary monkeys at the Rock of Gibraltar. Finally, a day trip to Africa takes us to Tangier where we plunge into the exotic, packed-tight markets and streets of old Morocco.

Lisbon and the Algarve — Experiencing the best of Portugal, we start in Lisbon, a ramshackle mix of glorious old and fun-loving new. Salty sailors' quarters and wistful Fado singers mix with ornate architecture to recall the glory days when Vasco da Gama and Magellan made Portugal a world power. After a uniquely matador-brutalizing Portuguese bullfight, we head for the south coast of your travel dreams — the Algarve. We explore the Land's End of Europe — windy and historic Cape Sagres before savoring pristine beaches and arm-wrestling octopi in the sleepy fishing village of Salema.

Portugal's Heartland — Leaving Lisbon for the countryside, we eat barnacles in a salty old fishing town, march with pilgrims on the anniversary of a miracle, ponder the local Romeo and Juliet, sample university life, and rummage through the riches of Portugal's Golden Age.

The Three Pearls Of Andalucia - Travel Video.  DVD Cosmos Global Documentaries.  52 Minutes.
Along the Rio Guadalquivir is Córdoba. Today the former caliph’s residence of the Omaiyad is a lively city with an historic past. In 152 B.C.
the town was founded during the rule of Claudius Marcellu and it was then that the Roman conquerors named it Corduba. Later the town became the capital of the province of Baetica, the hot southern region of Spain. At the beginning of the 8th century the town was the headquarters of its recent conquerors, Arabian governors and emirs and even today the architectural influence of the Moors is visible.

In the 10th century A.D. the town reached the zenith of its prosperity. It is believed that almost a million people once lived in the ‘Mecca of the West’. The Great Mosque, today's Mezquita, was extended and enlarged during that time. Marble, jaspis and granite columns decorate the beautiful interior of the mosque that contains eight hundred columns.

The old city of Granada extends across three hills, Sacromonte, the world famous Alhambra and Abaicín, a once densely populated Moorish district with almost thirty mosques. For several centuries around sixy thousand Moors brought the city’s maze of alleys to life but only a few of the historic Islamic buildings and mosques have survived.

Seville is today’s pulsating capital of Andalucia and is still strongly influenced by the brilliant architectural achievements of the Moors. In former times the Real Alcázar was the residence of the region’s Arabic rulers but most of its buildings were constructed during the reign of Peter The Cruel.

Casa De Pilatos is one of the most beautiful palatial buildings in Seville. The residence of the Dukes of Medinacelli was built between 1492 and 1520 following a pilgrimage by one of the dukes to the Holy Land. On his return journey, following the same route that the first Marqués of Tarifa took through Italy, he brought back several valuable columns and fountains made of carrara marble that today adorn the beautiful exterior and gardens of the residence.

The shoreline of the Guadalquivir River in the land of flamenco is full of life and joie de vivre. The true heart of Spain surely lies in Andalusia in the hot southern region of the Iberian Peninsula.

Albaicin - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Albaicín is one of the most picturesque areas in Granada and is famous for both its history as well as its numerous beautifully decorated buildings. In the 7th century B.C., first the Iberians and then the Romans and Visigoths settled here in the spacious hill area above the River Darro. However, it was only under the rule of the Moors, when Granada became an independent Islamic kingdom, that the region began to flourish.

Even today the splendour of the former Islamic monarchy is highlighted by the world famous and legendary Alhambra Palace. Due to a peace treaty with the Christians’military leaders, Mohammed The First had the impressive castle built. Over the years the Alhambra was extended and its architecture was embellished by its royal inhabitants until the town finally fell to the Catholic Kings.

In Albaicín the glorious atmosphere of old Granada can still be felt amid its buildings, its lanes and even in the air. For the architectural legacy of the Moors continues to enchant all those who experience it, right up to the present day.

Alhambra - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
In southern Spain, majestically, yet mysteriously, the legendary Alhambra proudly rises above Granada’s atmospheric old town.

After Córdoba, former centre of power of the caliphs, had fallen into the hands of the Christians in 1238, Granada became the country’s new capital city. Mohammed The First ordered the construction of the Alhambra’s massive walls and twenty-four watch towers above the remains of a comparatively modest fortress.

King Charles The Fifth deliberately built his palace at this location as it had once been the last bastion of Muslim power in Spain. It thus symbolised the triumph of the Christian world.

In addition to the external splendour of the Christian palace the full beauty of its Moorish architecture is only fully revealed by exploring its glorious interior.

Thus the despair of the last Nasrides ruler strikes a poignant chord today for, according to legend, when he was forced to abandon his palace to the Christian armies without a fight, his eyed filled with tears as he glanced back at his beloved Alhambra.

Aljama Mosque Andalucia (MEZQUITA-CATEDRAL DE CORDOBA) - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Mezquita Cathedral is one of the most important historical monuments in Cordoba, a beautiful city in southern Spain and former residence of the Moorish Caliphs.

The cathedral contains both Moorish and Christian architecture and a unique and fascinating combination of styles. However, Oriental design dominates the building. The building complex that surrounds the courtyard and its orange trees is known as the Patio De Los Naranjos and is one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in the world.

The immense prayer hall is the glorious focal point of the Mezquita and its several hundred columns and horseshoe arches create an oasis of stone. The 16th century cathedral is located in the middle of a splendid forest of columns and precious marble and paintings by Palomino decorate the main altar.

Here the Moors created a solid and enduring monument of their art and one of Córdoba’s most outstanding landmarks.

Andalucia Spain - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Andalusia in southern Spain is a fantasy land situated between Europe
and Africa.

In Algarrobo, a white village close to the coast, time seems to have stood still. A place of both inspiration and contemplation. Since Phoenician times the earlier ‘Malaca’ was a busy trading port that was defended by the Castillo De Gibralforo. The Cathedral, also known as ‘La Manquita’, symbolises a catholic victory on the former site of a mosque. On the edge of the city centre is the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba that was once a fortified residence on the hills of Castillo. The second largest city in Andalusia also became known as the birthplace of its famous son, world famous artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso.

Since the 1950‘s the modern coastal resort of Torremolinos has attracted mass tourism with a numerous variety of huge hotel skyscrapers, bars and restaurants.

In the hilly inland area of the Costa Del Sol is the pretty white mountain village of Mijas. A small hilltop bullfight arena shines bright white along with the houses of the surrounding area.

Marbella, the prima donna of the Costa Del Sol, serves as a rendezvous for the stars of stage and screen and a leisure resort for the international jet set.

Another short excursion into the mountains near the coast leads to Casares, a sleepy mountain village crowned by the ruins of a Moorish Castle.

During the Roman Carthaginian Wars Cadiz played an important role as a trading centre. After the Moors, came the Normans and in 1262, the city fell into the hands of the Christian king, Alfonso.

Dreamy harbour towns, cultural metropolises with a Moorish past, Christian buildings and white villages. Beauty in the Garden Of Eden – that’s Andalusia!

Cathedral of Santiago of Compostela Spain - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
The beautiful main facade of the Cathedral Santiago
De Compostela rises proudly into the sky, the final destination of a legendary medieval pilgrimage route. For more than twelve hundred years the marvellous buildings of the old town, as well as the striking cathedral, have attracted visitors from all over the world. During the Middle Ages the town enjoyed great prominence. In addition to Jerusalem and Rome, Santiago De Compostela was the third most important Christian pilgrimage destination.

Its beautiful main facade combines various decorative and architectural elements that are to be found along the pilgrims’ way, the Camino de Santiago. In addition to the imposing cathedral there are further treasures hidden within the historical centre of the town such as the 16th century Colegio De Fonseca.

Under the rule of Bishop Diego Xelmírez both the town and its Catholic church enjoyed much prosperity and the diocese became an archbishopric. Unlike the architectural transformation of its external façade most of the cathedral’s interior has retained its original form. The church’s main nave and altar, with its precious and exquisite decoration, are a remarkable religious work of art.

Santiago De Compostela: even today the town has retained all of its magic, its cultural appeal and deep religious significance.

Cordoba Spain - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Cordoba was once the most important metropolis of the Caliphate and today is a city of harmony and contrast. It is a city in which the history of the Caliphs, Romans, Jews and Christians
is still very much alive and was the centre of the Arab realm of Al-Andalus that reached its peak in around 1000 A.D.

The Ponte Romana extends across the Gudalquivir and leads to the old town. With its sixteen arches the Roman bridge that spans across the river is one of the city’s main landmarks.

The city’s most important building is the Mezquita Catedral in the centre of the old town. It is undoubtedly the most splendid mosque of Moorish-Islamic origin on the Iberian Peninsula. Construction of the main mosque began in 785 A.D. during the rule of Abd-Ar-Rahman The First. The world’s third largest mosque was built on the site of a West Gothic Christian church that was built on the remains of a Roman temple.

The Plaza Santa Marina dates back to the 17th century and was once used as a bull-fighting arena and also as a theatrical stage. Today it is frequently used as a marketplace. The striking monument of the famous Spanish toreador, Manolete, who was killed during a bullfight inside the arena, occupies a large section of the square.

Mighty walls surround the Medina. Some of its old gates have survived such as the Puerta De Almodovar that leads into the Jewish quarter. Once known as a wealthy city, Cordoba was considered to be a worthy prize and was thus well protected and fortified.

A combination of the Arabic, Jewish and Christian worlds, Cordoba is most deservedly the Pearl of Andalusia!

Costa Del Sol Spain - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
The Costa Del Sol is the name of the southern Mediterranean coast of Spain. In former times a variety of bumpy roads connected the region’s sandy bays and remote
fishing villages but today its modern roads cater for mass tourism.

Almunecar is the main tourist centre on this section of the coast. Once a tranquil fishing village, it’s now a busy coastal resort. A wide road separates clean, extensive beaches from huge apartment blocks that were constructed during an amazing transformation of the coastline.

Torrox is an Andalusian mountain village that has so far managed to remain off the tourist trail and in which village life continues as it always has done.

Since Phoenician times Malaga has been a busy trading port that was defended by the Castillo De Gibralforo that is located on the summit of a mountain. The large bay, with its protective mountain range in the north, enjoys a mild climate throughout the entire year.

Around ten kilometres south of Malaga is the modern coastal resort of Torremolinos, since the 1950’s a centre of mass tourism. The city developed at a wild pace and soon had all the attributes of a modern holiday resort, with innumerable huge skyscrapers, bars and restaurants and also endless sandy beaches and exciting entertainment facilities.

Marbella is the prima donna of the Costa Del Sol and a marvellous rendezvous for the stars of both stage and screen plus a leisure resort for the international jet set. The yachting harbour of Puerto Banus is the true symbol of Marbella and its quay has a colourful variety of bars, cafés, restaurants and exquisite shops.

The journey through fiery southern Spain ends with the Rock Of Gibraltar. Dreamy harbour towns cultural metropolises with a Moorish past and Christian buildings and white villages. The Costa Del Sol is full of history and magical atmosphere. The sun is just a bonus!

Galicia Spain - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Our journey through romantic northern Spain travels south through
Galicia along the Atlantic coast.

A Coruña is the region’s largest industrial city and shipping harbour and it thought to have been founded by the Phoenicians in 60 A.D. The Romans conquered this harbour city that has always been associated with the sea and it was from A Coruña that the invincible Spanish Armada set sail in1588 to invade England.

Santiago De Compostela is the capital of Galicia and since the Middle Ages it was, apart from Jerusalem and Rome, the most important pilgrimage destination in Christendom. Half a million pilgrims came here each year from all over Europe and Spain’s most religious city continues to attract the faithful. Some centuries ago each of the large villages of the Rias Baixas prospered due to fishing, as did Pontevedra. However, all this changed when its harbour was engulfed by sand some three hundred years ago. In contrast to Spain’s many other harbour cities, the old town of Pontevedra is almost the same now as it was in bygone times with cobbled streets, intimate squares and the residential palaces of the city’s former elite.

Across a huge chain bridge that spans the mouth of a deep river is Galicia`s largest city, Vigo. Its name is of Roman origin and it is believed that Vicus Spacorum was the starting-point of Caesar’s campaign against Britannia, as well as a storage area for his Empire’s oil, fish and wine.

For many centuries A Guarda, ‘the Female Guard’, has watched over the river border with Portugal and in the wooded mountain city of Monte Santa Tecla the Celts established a settlement that contained more than a thousand buildings that dated back to the 6th and 3rd centuries B.C. and formed part of a prehistoric settlement.

Throughout the centuries life in Galicia was not representative of that in the rest of Spain and both Romans and Moors considered it to be too remote for their interests. Maybe that’s what makes it such a special place to be!

Granada Spain - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Since the 7th century B.C., Iberians, Romans and West Goths settled in Granada but it was during Arab rule that the city first gained prominence.
Sixty thousand Muslims once lived in the old Moorish city complex on the hill above the ancient district of Albaicin.1

Granada has a truly unique and captivating atmosphere, one that has inspired poets, musicians and countless travellers from all over the world. A lively and contemporary university city and at the same time the guardian of an historic past that draws in a multitude of tourists keen to experience its special charm.

In the narrow valleys between the Alhambra and Albaicin Hills the gentle River Darro makes its age-old journey toward the city centre and the houses along the riverside have been restored to a high standard with typical wooden balconies, decorated façades and barred windows. The Banos Arabes are ancient Arab baths that date back to the 11th century.

The mighty La Alcazaba Fortress rises up from the top of a hill and is separated from the rest of the Alhambra by huge walls. The city extends to the plains below and in the background are the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The huge Torre De La Vela Watchtower is the highest point of the complex and was the first building of the Nasrides Dynasty.

The Alhambra served as a military headquarters, administrative centre and royal residence until the expulsion of the Moors by Christian militia. The interior of the Alhambra is like a hidden treasure that lies expectantly beyond plain red walls, waiting to be discovered. The most famous of the courtyards is the Lion Yard of which the well and ornate arcades took several years to complete.

The fiery south of Spain is a fantasy world situated between Europe and Africa. A land of passion and ancient culture: Granada is its shining pearl set amid the evocative landscape of Andalusia.

Madinat Al-Zahara Spain - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
A few kilometres outside the city of Córdoba in southern Spain lie the remains of a once legendary Moorish palace district, the Mahdinat Al-Zahra.

It is believed that in around 936 A.D. the Moorish monarch, Abd Ar-Rahman The Third, ordered the construction of the huge residence. Work on the palace, the administrative sections and the gardens took more than forty years to complete.

Over ten thousand workmen were involved in its construction but today little of the former splendour of this ‘Andalusian Versailles’ is apparent as only the mighty ruins of the former terraced palace have survived to the present day.

Thanks to the intensive restoration and reconstruction work of recent years the buildings of the former Reception Hall provide a fascinating insight into the royal court of the Moors. The Salón of Abd Ar-Rahman The Third shines out once again in all of its ancient and glorious splendour.

Soon after its completion the Mahdinat Al-Zahra was described as a ‘wonder of the western hemisphere’, a fairy-tale-like synthesis of the arts located upon the picturesque southern slopes of the Sierra Morena.

Toledo Spain - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Toledo is one of the oldest and proudest cities in Spain and during Roman times a large settlement was established there. Later, the Visi Goths recognized the strategic value of this city on the Rio Tajo and it became the capital of their empire.

Elevated on a mighty rock foundation the Toledo’s unique location served a useful purpose for its eventual defense as the city was the scene of many a bloody battle.

In 712 A.D. the capital of the Visi Goths was violently integrated with the Muslim Empire of Al-Andalus. Throughout the centuries Toledo has been regarded as a cultural centre of medieval Spain and was known as a ‘City of Three Cultures’ as it was here that Arabs, Jews and Christians lived together in peace until the time when the catholic church grew intolerant of other religions.

In 1229, construction work on the monumental Toledo Cathedral began and in 1493 the Gothic masterpiece was completed. The proportions of this enormous cathedral make it one of the most spectacular in Spain.

The mighty fortress of Alcázar is a world apart from the cathedral and served as the model for the later building of El Escorial. Since its construction in the 16th century, the city’s landmark was rebuilt and restored following numerous wars and hostilities.

The massive Bisagra Gate embodies yet another symbol of the fusion between Arabic Moorish and Spanish Castilian architecture.

Swathed in colourful and dramatic history Toledo enjoys a unique place among all of Spain’s old and fascinating cities.

Barcelona - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Barcelona is one of the most lively harbour cities on the Mediterranean and after Madrid, Spain’s second largest city and the capital of Catalonia. Intimate squares, small palaces and tangled alleys provide a good insight into its history as Iberians, Greeks and Romans once had trading posts there.

La Rambla is a wide and shady boulevard that travels through the old town to the harbour and is where life goes on both night and day. It’s also where street artists perform, shoeblacks work diligently and portrait painters tout for trade among the passing tourists.

The Museu Maritim Drassanes is situated in the royal dockyards that were built when the city was at its zenith. Its buildings are unique examples of Gothic architecture and the vast dimensions of the dockyard allowed thirty ships to be built simultaneously in the name of the Catalonian-Aragon crown.

Few parks are as famous as the Park Güell. With this, Antoni Gaudi created a new design concept in this fabulous garden city. At its entrance Gaudi placed a colourful lizard as a symbol of the water that is collected in subterranean cisterns and is used for the distribution of water in the park. The city itself also featured in Gaudi’s magnificent fantasies. The Palau Güell was treated to an ostentatious roof with a great array of air shafts and chimneys. But the sight that captures the imagination of most who see it is the amazing façade of the Casa Mila, a unique apartment block without equal. Not a single wall is straight, glass and plaster were used for its façade and colourful ornamental ceramics complete the work.

Barcelona is a melting pot that ranges from Gothic to Modernism, a veritable explosion of joie de vivre and creativity.

Madrid Spain - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Madrid is Europe’s most elevated metropolis, a royal capital of history, outstanding buildings and cultural treasures.

Most of Spain’s royal palaces are in Madrid, the capital of
Spain since the 17th century. Including the Palacio Real that even today serves as a royal castle. The colossal building of grey granite and limestone owes its impressive appearance to its length of five hundred metres and strategic elevated location.

On the southern side of the castle is Madrid’s most recent cathedral, La Almudena. It boasts a combination of styles between New Gothic and Classical and was two hundred years in construction.

Madrid also has a boulevard that has transformed it into a major metropolis, the Gran Via, that compares in both flair and dimensions with the exquisite streets of Paris and New York, with splendid noble buildings along with the contemporary.

What the Gran Via a hundred years ago the Paseo De La Castellana achieved comparable renown at the end of the last millennium: a replica of Manhattan, the Zona Azca. A modern city district with spectacular skyscrapers and spacious streets where chrome, glass and concrete dominate the futuristic skyline.

The royal splendour of former times has managed to successfully combine with the contemporary, and today Madrid is no less flamboyant - a city of historic joie de vivre!

El Escorial (Real Monasterio De San Lorenzo De El Escorial) Spain - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Around fifty kilometres northwest of Madrid, the austere yet opulent residence of El Escorial extends up the southern slope of the Sierra De Guadarrama. It was built during the rule of King Phillip II after his father Karl V ordered him to build a magnificent church in which he would eventually be buried. The Escorial was to be a pantheon for the Spanish aristocracy and also served as the country’s new centre of authority.

In rooms such as the Pudridero the significance of El Escorial as a burial place is evident. King Phillip II required that the exterior of the building should be plain and simple in contrast to the interior with its unusual works of art and priceless treasures.

The impressive art museum contains an exclusive collection by important artist such as Titian, Tintoretto, Rubens, Van Dyck, Hieronymus Bosch, Velázquez and El Greco.

In the royal pantheon, the Panteón De Reyes, lie the coffins of eleven Spanish monarchs. The splendid marble coffins with their golden inscriptions add both dignity and elegance to this burial place.

Philipp II was not only a larger-than-life tyrant, he was also an educated man who supported science and the arts. El Escorial was his most significant bequest to Spain.

Cathedral De Seville (The Cathedral of Seville Andalucia) - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Seville Cathedral, also known as the Catedral De Santa Mariá De La Sede, is the most important church in the Andalusian metropolis. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and also the third largest Christian church in the world. It replaced the former Islamic Seville Mosque that was built by the Almohades in 1198.

The cathedral’s various chapels not only have great aesthetic appeal but are also of historical artistic value as they contain a number of sacred works of art that are truly remarkable. The construction of the cathedral was designed to create an unmistakable symbol of Christian glory and power, a building with much political significance.

The cathedral also possesses a famous tomb, that of the legendary discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus.

From the bell gallery that is around seventy metres high visitors can enjoy a splendid view of the cathedral below as well as the unique courtyard and the endless ocean of rooftops in the old part of Seville.

Seville Spain - Travel Video.  DVD Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Seville is a gem of a city and Andalusia’s
most fascinating metropolis.

In the centre of the old town is the Real Alcazar that was originally home to numerous Moorish monarchs and later the domicile of Spanish kings. It’s said to be the oldest and most fascinating palace complex in the whole of Europe. Christopher Columbus was welcomed in the palace when he returned from his second voyage to America after having established a trading route with the New World. Its unique mixture of numerous cultures and époques augments the atmosphere of exquisite luxury.

With its labyrinth of white alleys, Santa Cruz is the city’s old Jewish district and is located close to both the Real Alcazar and the Catedral. Grated windows, flowerpots on the walls and old wooden gates are typical of this area of the city that exemplifies the traditional Andalusian way of life.

The Plaza De Toros and the seasonal hustle and bustle of its bullfights, dominates the El Arenal, the city’s former harbour district. Designed in the 18th century by Vicente San Martin, the bullfight arena was fully restored in the middle of the 19th century.

The Giralda and the Patio De Los Naranjos are the only remains of Sevilla´s Almohadian Mosque. The rest of the temple was destroyed by the Christians. Construction began in 1401 and it became the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. After the Petersdom in Rome and St. Paul’s in London it is the third largest Christian building in the world.

With its rich cultural inheritance bequeathed by both the Moors and the Christians, Seville is a truly incredible city with a flamboyant way of life and fiery Latin temperament!

Real Palaces of Seville - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
REAL ALCÁZAR DE SEVILLA Andalusia, Spain The royal palace of Real Alcázar is located in Seville, the capital of the autonomous Spanish province of Andalusia.

Dating back to the 8th century and formerly the oldest citadel built by the Moors, the palace was built on the ruins of a Roman fortress when the Almohaden transformed it into a palace. Following the conquest of the city, the Christian kings and most notably, Don Pedro, employed the best Moorish builders and artists, the Mudejaren.

In the Hall of the Envoys the wall tiles contain many Moorish designs and it was here that the country’s rulers received envoys from abroad. The furnishings and household goods of the royal private rooms were collected from around most of the known world.

The Gala Dining Room is particularly outstanding. It contains precious wall carpets and crystal chandeliers from Murano and a huge table dominates almost the entire length of the room.

Moorish arcades lead to the Andalusian Gardens that were planted in place of the original kitchen gardens and many of the courtyards feature a small water fountain that adds to the calm atmosphere.

Real Alcázar is the most beautiful example of Mudejar design, a fairy tale from the ‘One Thousand And One Nights’!
