Norway - Travel Video. VHS.
Globe Trekker Video.
Ian Wright begins his
Nordic journey high on a cliff in Stavanger, where he witnesses the
extreme sport of Base Jumping. He journeys from Staveanger to Bergen by
ferry, which takes him along just 150 of Norway’s 21,000 miles of
coastline. Ian enjoys a night out with locals and
travellers
in Bergen and discovers that drinking in Norway requires a small
mortgage.
The next stage of the journey is from Bergen to Voss by train. The
usually highly reliable train breaks down and Ian has to complete his
journey by taxi. He arrives in Voss before nightfall and camps out at
the edge of a clear lake – not a very comfortable option but next
morning aches and pains are soon forgotten as Ian takes on nature with a
lesson in river boarding.
Ian travels onwards to Stryn, one of Norway’s three summer ski resorts.
The journey takes two days by coach and Ian has the opportunity to see
Norway’s mountainscapes at their best, as well as take a short trip in a
replica Viking boat. Ian has a go at a telemart skiing – a traditional
form of skiing that combines downhill and cross country styles. To help
him recover, he takes a quick sauna.
Three hundred miles further north by bus to Trondheim, Ian rents a bike
and takes a whistle stop tour of the town. He then travels by train and
plane to Lapland, the land of the Midnight Sun.
Lapland is also known as Samiland and it covers parts of Sweden , Russia
and Finland. Ian thumbs a lift from a Sami Reindeer farmer and soon
finds himself erecting a Norwegian Labu or tent. Dinner that night is
dried reindeer meat, which seems to be a staple of the Sami diet.
Before leaving Lapland Ian is invited to a colourful Sami wedding. After
the ceremony the guests enjoy a lavish feast of, not surprisingly,
reindeer meat!
Ian dons his wellies, hat and white overalls and spends three days
gutting fish to earn enough money for a helicopter flight to Spitzbergen,
the Northern most point of Norway. With a greater population of polar
bears than humans, this island is the closest stretch of land to the
North Pole. The temperatures are way below freezing and Ian has the
opportunity to go ice diving with some resident researchers.
The ultimate challenge of Ian’s Norwegian journey comes in the form of
eight huskies and a sled which take Ian deep into the wilderness.
Approximately 60 minutes.

Bergen Norway
-
Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
The history of the ancient
and charming harbour town of Bergen,
Norway’s
‘secret’ capital city, began in the 11th century during the rule of
Bishop Olav Kyrre.
One of the city’s most important 20th century buildings is the Train
Station that was inaugurated in 1907. The Stasjon is a captivating
reminder of times gone by and its trains travel along one of the most
picturesque railway routes in Europe.
Bergen’s main tourist attraction is the Bryggen district that originated
in the middle of the 14th century when it was heavily influenced by the
North German Hanseatic Office. German traders were attracted by the
prosperous city and so had a permanent administrative HQ built.
The city not only boasts a fascinating history but also a number of
music festivals and world famous composer Edvard Grieg originated from
Bergen. Indeed, each year the city holds a music festival in his honour
with various concerts, ballets and theatrical performances.
The inhabitants of Norway’s ‘secret’ capital city continue to care for
and respect their historic cultural inheritance right up to the present
day.

Nusfjord Norway
-
Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
The inhabitants of the
Lofots situated in the High North of Europe
have
made their mark on these islands right up to the present day and have
established various wonderful communities such as the picturesque
village of Nusfjord, a fishing village that has retained all of its
original charm. The village is equivalent to an open-air museum and has
become one of the most famous tourist attractions of the Lofot Islands.
For more than a thousand years cod has been the most important commodity
for this northern archipelago and even the legendary Vikings appreciated
the once fish-filled waters of the Lofots. Many villages still display
long rows of fish that are hung out to dry in the salty sea air and are
a tasty specialty of this region.
Today there are a total of around two thousand fishermen on the Lofot
Islands, men who continue to work in the thousand year old cod fishing
of this remote region.
Here, Nature dominates all and it is well worthwhile to follow the
history of these island settlements and to explore picturesque fishing
villages such as that of Nusfjord.

Oslo Norway -
Travel
Video. DVD.
Vista
Point. 26 Minutes.
Although the Norwegian
metropolis of Oslo is a modern city it
continues to be inspired by the
lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. The
unique capital city of the Vikings is full of both culture and sport,
including a royal castle, various museums, ancient churches and world
famous sporting events. It has nine hundred years of history.
The conference rooms of the city’s government are decorated with frescos
and paintings by Munch, Krogh, Revold and Rolfsen and each year on the
tenth of December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, the Nobel
Peace Prize Ceremony takes place.
West of the harbour basin is Akerbrygge, a city quarter that was created
on the site of a former shipyard and which features some unusual
architecture where glass, metal and red brick dominates as in the style
of London’s Docklands.
The Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum features the long history of Norwegian
navigation. Various figureheads are exhibited and it is no surprise that
most of them are female as seafarers have always chosen to be protected
by goddesses! In the Kontiki Museum, the filigree balsa river boat is on
display. Thor Heyderdal sailed across the Pacific for one hundred and
one days in the Kontiki, from Peru to Polynesia.
This city is a royal residence and a cultural capital of Europe and is
the oldest of Scandinavia’s capital cities and the greenest metropolis
on the European continent. A place of joie de vivre, independence and a
colourful past!

Rick Steves'
Germany and Scandinavia 2000-2007
- Travel Video. DVD.
Seven
Shows: 3½ hours,
closed captioned, NTSC format, all region compatible.
Munich
and the Foothills of the Alps
— In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous
markets and go-for-Baroque palaces...while office workers surf in the
Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the
fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig and climb to the highest point
in Germany, the Zugspitz.
Then
we cross into the Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle.
Germany's
Romantic Rhine and Rothenburg
— Cruising the Rhine River, we dodge riverboat traffic and the legendary
Lorelei. After climbing castles and descending into dungeons, we relax
with Rhine wine. We tour Burg Eltz, a lived-in castle where the noble
lady still puts out fresh flowers. Then we enter the walled town of
Rothenburg for Germany's best wood carving, a vivid dose of medieval
punishment, and a tour with the night watchman of the town's lamp-lit
ramparts.
Germany's
Black Forest and Cologne
— Rick teams up with his wife and kids to appreciate the Gothic artistry
of Cologne's cathedral. Then it's time to enjoy the good life, dipping
into a classy mineral spa, trying our luck at a fancy casino, devouring
chocolate-cherry cake, and exploring Germany's most romantic forest.
Berlin:
Resilient, Reunited and Reborn
— Berlin is back, resuming its place as a great European capital. We
climb the Reichstag's new glass dome, sway at a modern-day cabaret, and
pop a few chocolates in the now thriving eastern sector. Along with
Germany's finest art, complicated Berlin also has hidden remnants of its
fascist and communist past. In a city that's rebounding and rebuilding,
we crane our necks at Potsdamer Platz, Europe's newest Times Square.
Copenhagen
and Aero — A
highlight of Scandinavia, Denmark's Copenhagen welcomes visitors with
remnants of Viking days, cosmopolitan flair and a high standard of
living. We join the locals — lunching, biking and then boating through
old Copenhagen. Our city tour ends in the world famous carnival, Tivoli
Gardens Amusement Park. For a glimpse of 17th century Denmark, we board
a train, then ferry to Aero Island where a bike ride among thatched
cottages, "snooping mirrors," and cobbled alleys reminds us of the world
of Hans Christian Andersen.
Oslo,
Bergen, and the Fjords
— We find that Norway's seafaring past lives on in Oslo as we boat
across the harbor and explore remnants of ocean adventure from Viking
Eric the Red to Thor Heyerdahl of Kon Tiki fame. The Nazi Resistance
Museum chronicles Norway's brave stance in World War II and a mammoth
ski jump beckons the super-skilled. We ride the scenic rails over
Norway's mountainous spine and cruise a fjord as part of the "Norway in
a Nutshell" route. Finally, in Bergen we stroll the Hanseatic quarter,
discovering links to the city's past.
Stockholm
and Helsinki — We
check out sleek Stockholm as an opener to a tour that winds up in
Helsinki, Finland. In Sweden's capitol, we browse in the old town, see
an opera at the baroque Queen's Theater, get close to an unlucky 17th
century warship and sample earlier centuries of Swedish life in a lively
open-air museum. Then we board a ship for a scenic overnight cruise
through the Baltic Archipelago to explore 19th century sights in modern
Helsinki, Finland.
