Hidden Treasures: Europe to the Max - Splendors of France Travel Video DVD.  2 Hours & 55 Minutes.
Take a grand tour of the Old World with public radio's original Savvy Traveler, Rudy Maxa, host of the award-winning American Public Television series, Smart Travels, and contributing editor to National Geographic Traveler magazine. This DVD includes visits to:

France's Champagne Region - Begin this intoxicating tour in Reims, home of the historic cathedral where French kings were crowned. Visit champagne producers both large and small in wine country, and shop for the fine chocolate in the medieval town of Troyes. Discover Charleville's tradition of puppetry, and marvel at the fortress of Sedan, the largest castle in Europe.

Normandy - Witness the birth of Impressionism in Giverny and in the museums in Rouen and Honfleur. The Norman conquest unfolds in the Bayeux tapestry, and we remember World War II's D-Day landing. After sampling cider and cheese in the farmland just inland from Honfleur, your journey ends at the awe-inspiring Abbey of Mont-St-Michel.

Carcassonne and the Pyrenees - From a fairy tale fortress to the gentle Pyrenees, Rudy takes in the castles and peaks of this magical region. Your itinerary includes an unforgettable stop at Carcassonne, the largest fortress in Europe; romantic castle ruins; and in the high country, one of the world's natural wonders--a mountain amphitheater with cascading waterfalls.

France's Bordeaux and Dordogne - Sample the best Bordeaux, and then cruise the lovely Dordogne and Lot Rivers, with stops at chateaux, ancient watermills, and perched villages. Attend cooking classes and embark on an underground adventure to see pre-historic cave paintings.

Europe Just For Fun - Looking for absolute R&R, total escape, or just a change of pace? Rudy shares his "personal picks" for a variety of European adventures that are especially entertaining, exhilarating or challenging, including hot-air-ballooning, mountain luge rides, golf, puppetry, amusement parks, country mazes, hiking, or just lazing on a sunny beach.

Extra Features:

Rudy's Travel Tips -
Ten biggest traveler mistakes; Strategies for beating the crowds; Choosing a hotel, and more.
Fascinating Side Trips - Champagne from the air; Monet's garden at
Giverny; Medieval jousting at Carcassonne, and more.

Rick Steves' France and Benelux - Travel Video.  7 Shows.  DVD.

Seven Shows: This DVD contains seven complete "Rick Steves' Europe" TV shows on France & Benelux, first broadcast from 2000-2005.

Running Time: 3½ hours. Closed Captioned. NTSC format, all region compatible.

Join host Rick Steves on a 3½-hour, seven-course travel feast through France, Belgium and Holland in seven half-hour “Rick Steves’ Europe” TV shows. You’ll begin in the heart of Paris, marveling at masterpieces, sampling tasty cuisine, and mixing with the locals in “urban village” neighborhoods. Outside of Paris you’ll stroll through Monet’s gardens, reflect on sacrifice at Normandy’s beaches, and take a pilgrimage to Mont St. Michel. To the south, Provence and the Riviera will dazzle you with sun, sea, fine wines and Roman ruins. To the north, Bruges and Brussels bring you the best of Belgium, old and new. Your trip ends in Amsterdam, where you’ll enjoy great galleries, quaint canals and bustling flower markets.

Paris: Grand and Intimate: After marveling at masterpieces in the Louvre and strolling the Champs-Elysees, we explore a delightful Parisian neighborhood. We meet a pipe organist, drop by a butcher shop, design our own perfume, and cruise the Seine.

Highlights of Paris: Eiffel and Monet to Crème Broulée: Packing the best of Paris into one episode, we scale the Eiffel Tower, then savor classic treats — from steak tartare to crème brulee. We marvel at Monet, Manet and company in the stunning Orsay Gallery. Tracing the sad steps of Marie Antoinette to the guillotine, we track French history from its bloody revolution to its extravagant belle epoch.

Normandy: War-torn Yet Full of Life: After exploring the half-timbered charm of Rouen, we reflect on Monet's lily ponds, peek in on local artisans, set up an easel at Honfleur's harbor, and venture into composer Eric Satie's eccentric world. After pondering sacrifice and celebrating freedom on the D-Day beaches, we hike with pilgrims to the enchanted island abbey of Mont St. Michel.

Provence: Legendary Light, Wind and Wine: Provence, known for its soft light and fierce wind, is as loved by Americans as it is by the sun. We climb Roman ruins in Nimes, explore a papal palace in Avignon, and savor vivid views immortalized by van Gogh in Arles. Crossing acres of lavender and vineyards, we explore the Côtes du Rhone and more wonders of the South of France.

French Riviera: Uniquely Chic: In fairytale Monaco we listen to the graceful reshuffling of personal fortunes at the casino. Then we follow in the footsteps of 19th century aristocrats along Nice's promenade des Anglais, and visit the picturesque, artist hangouts of Chagall, Matisse and Picasso.

Belgium: Bruges and Brussels: From the powerhouse headquarters of the European Union and Europe's grandest square in big-city Brussels, we go quaint with delicate lace and back lane bike rides in small-town Bruges. We climb a bell tower to get up close and fortissimo at a carillon concert. Then passionate chefs — creators of Europe's finest chocolate—give us a taste of their art.

Amsterdam and Dutch Side-Trips: Amsterdam stimulates all the senses, with Rembrandts and stately architecture from its Golden Age, and titillating street life from its modern age. Side-tripping into the countryside, climb windmills and tour the world's biggest flower market.

Aigues-Mortes - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. In the 13th century King Louis The Ninth was in search of a suitable location for a harbour on the Mediterranean that would serve both trade and military purposes. The Aigues-Mortes region was far from ideal as it was a swampland on which it was almost impossible to build, however, the orders of the King had to obeyed!

The seventeen hundred metre long town wall consists of ten gates and five defensive towers, a true masterpiece of mediaeval architecture.

King Louis The Ninth and his army embarked from Aigues-Mortes to conquer the Holy Land for Christianity and in 1246, two years before the king’s crusade to Egypt, the town’s inhabitants began to prepare the machinery of war for this great adventure. However, the crusade was unsuccessful, the king having been taken prisoner. Even so, this was not to be his final military expedition and following his liberation and return to France he was encouraged to mount a new crusade in 1270, one which he did not survive. The harbour also suffered a terrible fate: it silted up! Thus the town’s inhabitants experienced a difficult period in their history.

But thanks to its splendid town wall Aigues-Mortes still manages to capture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

Aix-En-Provence - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Hot springs once inspired the Romans to settle in a valley below the Celtic Oppidum that they had just destroyed. However, today’s Aix-En-Provence and its numerous lanes offer far more than simply water.

Aix is one of the most beautiful cities in France and its numerous fountains and majestic squares highlight the city’s unique ambience and romantic character. Indeed, more than forty spectacular fountains cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city.

Nearly all of its splendid buildings and wonderful avenues date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, the Golden Age of Aix-En-Provence.

As a centre of education and fine art this elegant city continues to be a rich source of creative inspiration.

Arles Provence - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
A beautiful fountain with an Egyptian obelisk graces the Place De La République in the heart of Arles, an historic and charming small town in the south of France.

Next to the City Hall is the Romanic Saint Trophime Cathedral with its splendid church porch that dates back to the 12th century.

The town’s Amphitheatre is the region’s greatest building that has survived from the time of the Roman Empire and it is also the most important arena in the former Gallic colony. Three watchtowers that date back to the Middle Ages were left in tact by archaeologists as a reminder of the fortifications of the beautiful amphitheatre.

Arles and its magnificent cathedral soon became one of the Romans’ most favoured towns and was referred to as ‘Little Rome in Gaul’ when more than twenty thousand spectators witnessed savage gladiatorial battle in its Amphiteatre.

Today Arles is closely associated with the name of world famous Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. He completed around four hundred paintings in the town.

A visit to Arles is like travelling back in time but with all the unique atmosphere of the present.

Avignon A famous song that features a bridge takes us into the French Provencal town of Avignon. ‘Sur Le Pont D’Avignon’: thus begins the world famous French song that is familiar with both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the Pont Saint Énézet Bridge.

Internal disputes in addition to power struggles in Rome transformed Avignon into the new seat of the Pontificate. The impressive Popes’ Palace dominates the centre of the town. Its exterior resembles a military fortress rather than a religious residence.

A coat of arms above the main entrance is reminiscent of the papal court that was founded by Klemens The Sixth. In 1348 he bought Avignon for 80,000 gold ducats from Johanna The First, Queen of Sicily. During his term of office he added a new, more luxurious building to the Old Palace that was constructed between 1334 and 1342. The beauty of the palace manifests itself in the numerous terraces and towers that were used for defensive purposes during the 14th and 15th centuries.

Seven successive French popes transformed Avignon into one of the most glamorous medieval courts in Europe. The town’s expansion gradually became increasingly more splendid and the pontificate’s dependence on French royalty became further entrenched.

Brittany (Bretagne), France - Travel Video.  DVD.  Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere medieval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbor villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen.

Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both medieval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere.

Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom.

Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident.

Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany.

The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

Carnac (Carnac Stones Bretagne) France - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
The megaliths of Carnac in Brittany are stone relics that are thousands of years old and date back to the middle of the Neolithic period. Four long avenues of mighty stone known as ‘alignments’ extend across eight kilometres of scenic terrain.

The Kerzerho Stones are one of the most splendid alignments in Carnac. They consist of more than eleven hundred stones and cover an area of almost two kilometres. But what significance did this formation have with its Neolithic creators and how were they able to transport these massive stones? The stones will probably never reveal their secrets but many historians and archaeologists believe that they were connected with some kind of religious belief.

The area around Carnac also contains numerous intriguing Dolmen, a series of vertical stones that support a large slab, a kind of stone table. Along the northern border of Plouharnel Village there is a fine example of this unique construction that dates back to the Stone Age, the Dolmen of Rondonssec.

The large number of Dolmen indicates that the region was once not only of great astronomical importance but was also used as a burial site. It is not known who was buried here but they may have been tribal and religious leaders as well as those who had made an important contribution to the well-being of the tribe.

For several centuries the tranquil and mysterious atmosphere of this place has fascinated all those who have experienced it. The megaliths of Carnac are masterpieces of prehistoric architecture and grand monuments that have survived time itself.

Dinan (Bretagne) France - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance and is one of the most beautiful and well preserved medieval towns in Brittany.

Today, cobbled lanes and several half-timbered buildings highlight the town’s colourful history and in 1066 many of Dinan´s inhabitants took part in the Norman Conquest and the Hundred Years´ War also left its traces here. However, despite its battles and sieges the picturesque old town has survived to the present day and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brittany.

The town´s defences were constructed in the 14th century. A circular wall, two and a half kilometres long, protected the inhabitants of Dinan from hostile attack.

Due to its well planned defences the town remained untouched and even today it’s like stepping back into the Middle Ages.

French Riviera (Cote D' Azur), France - Travel Video.  DVD.  Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Our romantic journey begins in the city of Cannes in the south of France, along the ‘Blue Coast’, the Côte D`Azur. For most of the time, this impressive section of the Mediterranean coast enjoys a mild climate and is synonymous with a luxurious lifestyle beneath the southern sun. Le Suquet, the old town that is located above the old port has, in spite of tourism, managed to retain its air of calm sophistication.

The markets in the old town offer an abundance of eye-catching vegetables, fruit and fresh fish. Narrow and picturesque alleys lead up to the tiny mountain of Mont Chevalier on which the historical area of the city is situated.

Close by is the Cap D`Antibes with its mighty castle that from 1386 was owned by the Grimaldis and in the 16th century became a French possession. A huge defensive wall built by the Sun King‘s master fortress builder surrounds the old town and protects its seaward side.

Nice is the ‘dream coast’s’ fascinating and colourful city located on the curve of Angel Bay, a metropolis that has lost little of its turn of the century charm. The magnificent Promenade Des Anglais, named after the resort’s former large contingent of English visitors, was built during the19th century. The historical centre of the city, Vielle Ville, has become the home of Arabian immigrants, thus couscous features prominently on the menu. The old fish market is the most beautiful on the entire Côte D`Azur and its traditional displays of seafood are a feast to the eye.

In the centre of the Côte D`Azur’s enchanting landscape is the picturesque medieval village of Eze. Most of the village that can be seen today had its origins in the 10th century and its fine old buildings, charming back streets and archways are real architectural gems.

Only a little further along the coast is the Principality of Monaco which, after the Vatican, is the smallest yet most unique sovereign state in the world. Luxury yachts anchor in the harbour throughout the year and travel from all over the globe to visit this much sought after tax haven and exclusive casino paradise.

Romance, history, luxury, glamour, prosperity and sunshine: the Côte D`Azur!

Gulf of Morbihan (Golfe Du Morbihan), Bretagne, France - Travel Video.  DVD.  Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
The Golfe Du Morbihan is situated on the south coast of Brittany and protects the region from the strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fascinating coastal landscape with huge castles and extensive sand dunes.

Influential and wealthy ship owners once settled here: they ran the East India Trading Company that earned high taxes for the French monarchy. The present day harbour makes it difficult to believe that it was once a busy centre of trade with the distant Orient but the town’s well preserved buildings indicate its former wealth and ferryboats travel to the village on the opposite side of the Lorient that still boasts a splendid array of huge warehouses.

The Megaliths Of Carnac are stone relics that are thousands of years old and date back to the middle of the Neolithic Period and although they have been analysed by scientists they are nonetheless full of mystique as four long avenues of mighty stone known as ‘Alignments’extend across eight kilometres of scenic terrain.

The enchanting medieval city of Auray is situated on a bend of the Rivière D`Auray that flows into the Golfe Du Morbihan. The city has earned its place in the history books of Brittany. Here, two families once fought to rule this land and a battle decided which one!

The attractive charm of the Brittany landscape owes much of its allure to its picturesque old stone houses and idyllic bays. The Golfe Du Morbihan with its numerous islands both large and small is a French paradise set along the rugged Atlantic coast.

Les Baux de Provence France - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Les Baux de Provence Surrounded by the attractive provincial mountain landscape of the Alpilles there is a romantic mediaeval town high on a rock, Les Baux-De-Provence, located 400 metres above the Crau Valley. The historic origins of the village date back to the first millennium A.D.

Located in the lower, busier part of the town, the Saint Vincent Church dates back to the 12th century and it is an atmospheric setting for famous Christmas performances such as the Shepherds´ Midnight Mass.

Archaeological discoveries and precious works of art are to be found in the Musée D´Histoire De Baux that also serves as the entrance to the upper part of the town.

In times of freedom the country’s finest troubadours gathered in the town’s now ruined castle. Immortalized by a monument, the farmer poet, Charles Rieu, is considered to have been a fine exponent of this age-old tradition. However, in1483 the art of the troubadour grew silent and was replaced by the sound of battle when the powerful catapults of Ludwig The Eleventh destroyed large sections of the castle.

Like no other village in the Alpilles, Les Baux-De-Provence has long been the centre of this region’s glorious history.

Locronan (Lokorn Bretagne) France - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
The massive tower of Saint Ronan Church rises above the village of Locronan and its eight hundred inhabitants in the French region of Brittany. In the 15th century the sleepy village developed into a prosperous sail-making centre until the arrival of successful competition and lower prices.

The village owes its popularity to the old architecture and dark grey granite buildings that lie at the historic heart of Locronan. The sudden loss of prosperity meant that there was insufficient money either to maintain the buildings or to construct new ones. Thus a walk through the picturesque village is like a fascinating journey back to the time of the French Renaissance.

Famous film directors such as Roman Polanski have used the village’s unique scenery as a backdrop to their movies. With all the evocative ambience of this wonderful place and far away from the noise of motor vehicles, it’s like being in another world.

Louvre (Musee Du Louvre Palais Du Louvre) France - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
The Louvre in Paris is, literally, a palace of art as for more than two centuries this former castle of the Kings of France has contained one of the greatest and most famous art museums in the world.

The origins of the Louvre date back to the 13th century. Originally, the building resembled a simple fortress until King Carl The Fifth made the building his personal residence. In 1546 the French architect Pierre Lescot received an order from King Franz The First to build a brand new Renaissance palace.

Franz The First was also responsible for the fact that a certain Andrea Del Sarto purchased the first art collection for the monarch while visiting Italy. Thus, masterpieces such as Leonardo Da Vinci´S world famous painting, the Mona Lisa, became the property of the French King.

One of the most famous and treasured paintings in the Louvre is the perfectly formed statue of Aphrodite, better known as the Venus De Milo. In addition to various collections from the Oriental, Greek, Roman and Etruscan periods, the Egyptian section is particularly impressive.

Each year six million visitors pour into the former royal residence of the Louvre, majestic home to much of the world’s most treasured works of art.

Marseille, France - Travel Video.  DVD.  Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of ‘Massalia’. In the Middle Ages the city’s main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice.

One of Marseille’s main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers’ church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary.

Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master’s galleys into the harbour.

Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille’s new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta;the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century.

The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria.

A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres.

Mont Saint Michel (Le Mont Saint Michel Bretagne) France - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
An 80 metre high mound of granite in Normandy, Le Mont-Saint -Michel, with its historic buildings is like something from a fairy tale. Powerful fortifications surround both the small town and the abbey at top of the rock, remnants of Mont-Saint- Michel’s dramatic past.

The three-storey monastery in the northern section, La Merveille, is one of the finest examples of French Late Gothic design. In the middle of the 10th century Benedictine monks from Saint Wandrille took over this mountain pilgrimage that soon developed into an important pilgrimage destination.

During the Hundred Years´ War between England and France the monastery increasingly grew to resemble a fortress and the historic development of the town is exhibited in numerous museums.

The repairs, extensions and decoration of the Benedictine took several hundred years thus creating a unique monument to the history of French construction that united various talented artists and architects of various epochs.

Nice France - Travel Video.  DVD.  Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Nice is the Côte D`Azur‘s fascinating and colourful city located on the curve of Angel Bay, a metropolis that has lost little of its turn of the century charm. It is also a place of contrast with all the pulsating life of an international city mixed with the rich Mediterranean flair of the south.

The Russian Tsars also spent much time in Nice and in around 1900 a Russian Orthodox church was built. With its six eye-catching onion-shaped domes, it was designed by the Russian architect, Preobrajensky, and is the most beautiful example of its kind in the western hemisphere. The foundations of the building were designed in the shape of a Greek crucifix and the interior features a remarkable collection of Russian icons.

A good way to visit numerous places of interest is by taking a journey on a small sightseeing train known as the Azur Express.

Just outside Nice there are some remarkable Roman ruins and a villa on the excavated site contains the Matisse Museum that features each of the famous artist’s sculptures.

Nice is more than ‘nice’ – joie de vivre never had it so good!

Nimes Provence, France - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
For almost two thousand years an imposing Roman amphitheatre has dominated the French city of Nîmes.

Prior to the Romans the Celts established a settlement in Nîmes. During the rule of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus the city grew in importance. The Arena was once the setting for gladiatorial battles but today it is matadors who fascinate their audiences during the Whitsuntide Féria.

The amphitheatre was built in around 70 A.D. Nîmes, or “Nemausus” as the Romans named their colony, developed into an important centre. In the 2nd century A.D. emperors Hadrian and Antonius Pius ordered the construction of two further splendid buildings, thus the town was enriched by fine architecture.

In contrast to the famous Roman Arena at Arles the Nîmes replica of the Colosseum still contains some well-preserved sections of the highest floor, the Attika.

Today the beautiful view from the most highly elevated seats of the Amphitheatre extends across the rooftops of the picturesque old town of Nîmes and its two thousand years of glorious history.

Provence, France - Travel Video.  DVD.  Vista Point.  26 Minutes.
Marseille is the most important city in Provence and is situated on the south coast of France.

From a distance, one of Marseille’s main landmarks rises high above the harbour: the seafarers’ church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. With abundant internal furnishings, Byzantine arches, golden mosaics and numerous votives it is a splendid structure inspired by Byzantine Romanic design.

The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the 5th century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians.

A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe, Les Calanques, a unique nature reserve where shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres.

Sur Le Pont D’Avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars!

A place of radiant light and sweet aromas with villages that nestle in the rocks like eagles’nests and with cities that have an historic past.

Provence is indeed a captivating land full of fascinating contrasts.
