East Africa
- Travel Video. DVD.
Cosmos Global Documentaries. 52
Minutes.

East Africa
is one of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the world and its
magnificent wilderness and fascinating wildlife is one of the few
remaining unspoiled regions on earth.
Lake Naivasha is the ideal habitat for both the rare Fish Eagle and
African Eagle, thus it is a perfect location from which to observe these
fascinating birds. Due to its rich variety of wildlife and the
spectacular beauty of its landscape
Kenya
is one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations.
The Massai Mara National Park is located around six hours from Nairobi
and is one of the country’s most extraordinary game reserves. Its name
indicates the presence of one of Africa’s most colourful tribes, the
Massai.
The Amboseli National Park also contains many of East Africa’s most
important landscapes. and represents the magnificence of the African
flora and fauna that grows in this relatively small, protected area.
The local wildlife stays at a safe distance from the geysers of Lake
Bogoria as the steaming hot springs can prove fatal for the flamingos
and other water birds that live there. Nevertheless, quite often the
bones of dead animals can be seen close to the geysers as some venture
too close and are killed by the hot steam.
At an altitude of nearly six thousand metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is the
highest mountain on the African continent. For most of the time its
summit is covered by a dense ring of cloud that gives the mountain an
air of mystique.
There are few other places on earth that offer the huge variety of
nature as does the legendary east of the African continent. A magical
destination and a wild natural paradise that is second to none!

Hadendoa
- Travel Video. DVD.
Cosmos Global Documentaries. 52
Minutes.

Enormous caravan trains once
traversed the Sahara Desert that extends for nine million square
kilometres and is the largest desert in the world.
Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan’s metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman
is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader,
Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al
Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was
later ruled by the British.
In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were
also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi´s army. Today they live in the
environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of
transport.
Those travelling across the Sahara have always had to cope with the
savage climate of the desert and in ancient times, as well as today, the
overwhelming heat saps the strength of both man and beast as the daytime
temperature can reach a scorching fifty five degrees Celsius.
At the foot of the mountain range that we must cross in order to travel
deep into the homeland of the Hadendoa we meet a group of wood
gatherers. In addition to the trading of camels and goats, the gathering
and selling of wood is one of the main sources of income for this unique
nomadic people.
Without a sound several mounted Hadendoa warriors have approached us.
The atmosphere is anything but relaxed and our uncertainty seems to
please the warriors who, mounted on camels, are truly menacing. In the
past the British army also experienced the wrath of these people. The
looks on the faces of the Hadendoa further increases the tension.
Finally, after what seems like several minutes, we tentatively step
forward. In broken Arabic we try to explain to the warriors that we have
journeyed far to meet them. Our initial scepticism is replaced by a long
and amicable handshake with their leader that sets our fears to rest.
Surrounded by the desert and the Red Sea Mountains and cut off from most
of the influences of modern civilization, the legendary Hadendoa Tribe
has somehow managed to maintain its unique cultural identity and
freedom.

The Lakes Of The Great Rift Valley
- Travel Video. DVD.
Cosmos Global Documentaries. 52
Minutes.

The Great Rift Valley is
part of a huge geological fault in East Africa. This fascinating deep
scar in the Earth’s crust that divides Kenya in a north-south direction,
extends for nine thousand kilometres within a wild and seemingly endless
landscape. The fault is particularly famous for its soda, alkaline and
freshwater lakes such as Lake Naivasha that is located a hundred
kilometres from Nairobi.
As with many other lakes in the Great Rift Valley, with more than four
hundred bird species Lake Naivasha is a true paradise among
ornithologists. The tranquillity of the lake can be quite deceptive and
the Massai name of the lake, En-Aiposha, meaning ‘back and forth’, is an
indication of how turbulent Naivasha can sometimes be.
A friendly welcome awaits visitors to Crescent Island at the southern
end of Lake Naivasha. This idyllic island is located on the edge of a
submerged volcanic crater and as there are no dangerous animals on the
island it can be explored at leisure.
Lake Nakuru’s main attraction is its flamingo population. Up to two
million of these birds once lived here and even today they have
transformed the lake into a mass of dazzling colour. Cormorants, heron
and pelican are among the most important birds on Lake Nakuru. They each
survive on fish of which the lake has an abundant supply.
Located below the six hundred metre high Laikipia Escarpment, Lake
Bogoria is the most spectacular lake in the Great Rift Valley. As with
most lakes in this region Lake Bogoria is alkaline due to its lack of
outlets yet at the same time it is paradise for the flamingo.
The fascinating lakes of the Great Rift Valley are one of the most
outstanding highlights of Kenya’s landscape and one of the most
spectacular areas on the entire African continent.

Lake Tanganyika: Jewel Of The Rift - Travel Video. VHS. National
Geographic.
60 Minutes
Review: This is a great movie!
I own a number of National Geographic and IMAX nature movies, and this is
one of the absolute best. The photography is spectacular. The narration is
excellent. The story line is incredibly interesting. And the content --
the cichlids of the Lake Tanganyika -- are phenomenally interesting.
Since watching this movie I've read about a dozen books on the
subject, bought my own fish tank, and started collecting cichlids from
Lake Tanganyika.
I have a 3 year old daughter, and we usually watch a movie before
bedtime. Barney and Sesame Street got old for me, so we started watching
animal and fish movies. I've seen this movie at least 50 times, and I find
it fascinating every time. My daughter loves it too...just last night she
said "Daddy, can we watch the fish movie?" Martin T.
