Cultural Treasures: Austria
-
Travel Video. DVD.
Cosmos Global Documentaries.
52 Minutes.
Vienna was once
Austria’s seat of Empire,
located in what is the very heart of Europe.
The monumental Stefansdom is Vienna’s most prominent landmark. The
cathedral’s three-sectioned hall with its late Romanesque western side
was built at the beginning of the fourteenth century and its façade was
only widened later when its steep roof was also re-built.
The Wiener Hofburg is a large complex of buildings that contain various
architectural styles dating from between the thirteenth and nineteenth
centuries and was the Viennese residence and legislative centre of the
Habsburger Dynasty, the emperors of the ‘holy Roman empire’ of the
German nation.
Amid the vast terraces of the Wachau vineyards is the village of
Weissenkirchen in which several inns provide their customers with an
ideal opportunity to sample the wines of this region. Wine growing has a
long tradition in this section of the Danube, indeed, the area between
Krems and Melk is one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria.
The Semmering Railway is a remarkable alpine railroad that has been
operating for a hundred and fifty years. Te starting point of a
fascinating journey is the town of Gloggnitz that has around seven
thousand inhabitants. The railway line to the Semmering Pass contains
sixteen viaducts, more than a hundred bridges and fifteen tunnels!
Salzburg is rightfully proud of its most famous citizen, Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, as both his birthplace and residence are situated in the
middle of the old town. Mediaeval Salzburg became the ‘German Rome’, an
Early Baroque city whose architecture was influenced by Italian design:
a city of art, faith and flamboyant culture.
Due to the exquisite taste of the royal archbishops of that glorious
time, today Salzburg is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in what
is one of the finest countries in Europe.

Rick Steves' Austria and the Alps
- Travel
Video. 7 Shows.
DVD.
Five
Shows: 2½ hours,
closed captioned, NTSC format, all region compatible.
Here's where we'll take
you...
Vienna
— In Europe's classiest capital we'll tiptoe through the palace of Maria
Theresa and be dazzled by the Hapsburg crown jewels. Then we'll picnic
on the Danube, nibble strudel in an old world cafe, blush at slinky Art
Nouveau,
and waltz to the three-four beat of Johann Strauss.
Salzburg
and Surroundings
— The birthplace of Mozart — and everyone's Sound of Music fantasies —
Salzburg is a baroque jewel of a town. It's also the springboard for
lots of alpine fun — from thrilling summer bobsledding, to idyllic boat
rides in the Salzkammergut lake district, to exploring the delightful
romantic town of Hallstatt.
Alps
of Austria and Italy
— From high on the Zugspitze at the Germany and Austria border, Rick
makes his way down to popular Innsbruck, the historic provincial capitol
of the Hapsburgs. We explore a medieval museum, get a resident's tips on
cuisine — especially dumplings — and slap dance the night away in a
nearby Tyrolean village. By way of historic Brenner Pass, we turn to
feudal Italy at Reifenstein Castle. Then we're out-of-doors, as we zoom
up rock cliffs in a cable car and hike through Alpine meadows in the
Italian Dolomites.
Alps
of Austria and Switzerland
— Rick makes a home base out
of Chamonix, the original French Alpine resort, ever popular with
international skiing and party crowds. Who says there's no easy way to
conquer Mount Blanc? Just hop a gondola and you'll soar past the great
peak, over glaciers and into Italy. We train over to Appenzell,
Switzerland on the Glacier Express Railway and find Swiss traditions
thriving in yodel-happy, cowbell country.
The
Best of the Alps: Switzerland's Jungfrau Region
— If Heidi is alive, she's
in this sky-high corner of the Swiss Alps, with cowbells ringing on
breathtaking ridges. After settling into a traditional village where
locals scythe hay by hand, we hike and bike. We blast an alphorn, get
sprayed by waterfalls raging deep inside a mountain, and munch muesli
for breakfast at 10,000 feet. For a finale, we ride Europe's highest
lift up the mighty Jungfrau for hot cocoa and oh-wow views.

Carinthia
- Travel Video. DVD.
Vista Point. 26 Minutes.
Carinthia is
Austria’s
southernmost region and borders both Italy and Slovenia.
It is located
in the sunny heart of Europe with more than a thousand lakes plus
spectacular alpine regions and numerous Celtic Roman excavation sites,
medieval castles, monasteries and cathedrals.
In the eastern part of Carinthia and more than a thousand metres above
sea level is one of the region’s oldest historical villages, the
mountain village of Diex. In the fifteenth century the Turks invaded the
area with great savagery thus, as protection, local farmers built
castellated churches in which they sought sanctuary.
Friesach, Carinthia’s oldest city, has retained what must be the true
ambience of the Middle Ages, with a fortified princely estate and
churches and monasteries that are surrounded by sturdy walls and a moat.
The Maria Saal Open Air Museum is situated in the heart of Carinthia. In
this richly cultural and historic area various traditional farm
buildings from all over Carinthia have been reconstructed.
Klagenfurt is the administrative centre of Carinthia: a middle class
garden city that does not contain the fine buildings of the aristocracy
but has a good helping of southern flair and, due to the nearby
Wörthersee, is a marvellous summer resort.
The Grossglockner High Alps road travels through one of the greatest
natural landscapes in the world, the Hohe Tauern National Park, a
remarkable mountain world in which nature is at its most glorious.

Graz
- Travel Video. DVD.
Vista Point. 26 Minutes.
Graz is the capital
of
Austria’s
federal state of Styria and in 2003 was
designated as Europe’s Capital
City Of Culture. Indeed, due to its geographical location, for many
centuries Graz has been a melting pot of culture.
The Schlossberg Mountain towers above the city and in 1894 a rack
railway was introduced in order to overcome the severity of its 60 per
cent gradient. The Romans and Celts once used the mountain as a place of
ritual ceremony and today small pathways and pavilions make the mountain
more accessible. In the 12th century a medieval castle was built on the
plateau and in 1531 it was transformed into a mighty fortress that
served as a defense against the Turks.
With nearly 32,000 exhibits that date from the 15th to the 19th
centuries the Zeughaus contains the largest collection of historic
weaponry in the world.
The often-extended Grazer Burg was once the residence of the Hapsburgs.
One of its towers contains a unique double spiral Gothic staircase
constructed of sandstone that shines out magnificently in a wonderful
array of colour. The entire complex, along with each of its numerous
building styles and adjoining park, is now the seat of Styria’s
provincial government.
Located on a hill to the north east there is another fine example of
Baroque architecture, the Maria Trost Basilica. In the 17th century
those who sought help and consolation climbed two hundred and fifteen
steps to a Gothic Madonna who was thought to possess miraculous powers.
Within the interior of the church and its colourful wall and ceiling
mounted frescos, there are also various scenes of battle.
Graz is a city in which the artistic and architectural styles of the
German-speaking nations, the Balkans and the Mediterranean are united.
It is a remarkable city of age old traditions, mediaeval flair and
contemporary life.

Graz
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
Graz is located in the
centre of Styria and is the second largest
city
in Austria, a town that fascinates with its southern flair, magnificent
historical buildings and beautiful panoramic views.
The city’s main landmark is its twenty-eight metre high clock tower that
was built in 1561 and is one of the few remains of an old fortress. In
order to facilitate a clearer view of the time from the historic part of
the town below, the minute hand of the clock was exchanged with that of
the hour hand.
The first recorded history of Graz dates back to 1128 but earlier
archaeological records indicate that it was originally a settlement in
2,000 B.C.
But the main architectural focal point in Graz is the Landhaus. Domenico
Ell’allio transformed the old meeting hall of Styria’s country estates
into a typical Renaissance building.
Many cultural and historic works of art combine in perfect harmony and
thus make Graz a particularly unique and attractive town.

Hallstatt
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
Hallstatt is located on the
shores of a sleepy Austrian lake,
surrounded
by high hills and the Dachstein Mountain Range. Similar to a fjord,
Hallstatt Lake extends in front of the picturesque village that was one
of the earliest and most unique settlements in this region.
Due to the early discovery of large salt deposits in the surrounding
mountains, the village has a proud history that dates back a thousand
years and archaeology has revealed that this area was inhabited from
around five thousand years B.C. Long before Christianity came to
Salzkammergut and prior to any churches being built, an independent
prehistoric culture evolved.
The village contains a rich variety of historic buildings and its
churches contain precious works of art such as a Late Gothic altar
created by Leonhard Astl. The old marketplace and fountain is crowned by
a trinity column that dates back to 1744. The welcoming facades of the
dwellings have graced this atmospheric village since the 16th century
and the market probably dates back to the 14th century.
In 1891 Lake Street played a vital role for the village’s busy
commercial traffic and the impressive Countryside and Pre-History Museum
displays the history of salt mining in the area and its importance to
the village.
In 1846 the Salinen civil servant, Johann Georg Ramsauer, made a
sensational discovery when he discovered a prehistoric burial ground in
the village. During seventeen years of excavation a total of twenty
thousand objects were discovered in nine hundred and eighty graves.
These discoveries subsequently led to the establishment of Hallstatt’s
intriguing and fascinating culture.

Melk
Abbey (Stift
Melk)
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
The fine buildings of the
Benedictine monastery of Melk majestically rise up
from
a plateau above the fascinating town on the River Danube. The elegant,
yellow buildings of the monastery have become well-known far beyond
Austria.
The monastery’s eighteen hundred manuscripts are extremely valuable and
although many treasures were destroyed by a devastating fire the oldest
texts date back to the early 9th century.
The 18th century marked the beginning of extensive construction work in
the monastery that subsequently transformed the church into an
enchanting example of Baroque design.
The exquisite design of the church’s splendid interior was mostly the
work of Italian architect, Antonio Beduzzi.
But it is the remarkable architecture of the central Baroque buildings
that have given Melk its reputation as being an icon of occidental
monastery culture.

Salzburg
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
The magnificent buildings
within Mozart’s famous city of Salzburg are not the
only
reason why it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in
Austria. The Prince Archbishop, Wolf Dietrich, ordered that Salzburg
Cathedral be built according to Italian Early Baroque design. It was
constructed between 1614 and 1628 on the site of a previous Romanic
building.
At one time the Getreidegasse served as the main road of the old city
and on January 27th 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in house
number seven.. 119 metres above the town is one of Middle Europe’s most
well preserved castles, Hohensalzburg, which covers an area of around
30,000 square metres.
The centre of Kapitel Square is dominated by a Schwemme, a fountain that
dates back to the 18th century where the city’s horses were washed down.
There are numerous impressive sacred buildings in the city such as the
Baroque Kollegien Church designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer Von Erlach.
A fascinating and remarkably attractive park surrounds the Lustschloss
Hellbrunn that dates back to both the Manieristic and Early Baroque
period. The interior of the palace is as beautiful as its external
appearance. Illusionist architectural paintings were a popular device
designed to alienate reality.
Due to the exquisite taste of the royal archbishops of a glorious age,
today Salzburg is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Europe.

Salzburg - Travel Video.
DVD.
Vista Point. 26 Minutes.
The Austrian city
of Salzburg is a city of bishops as well as being the birthplace
of
world famous classical composer, Amadeus Mozart.
The cathedral is located in the heart of the city, a Baroque building
situated on the same site as the city’s first church and now surrounded
by several squares. Even today the cultural picture of the city on the
Salzach is dominated by more than a hundred churches, castles and
palaces.
Hohensalzburg is the largest fully-preserved medieval fortress in Middle
Europe. It is located one hundred and nineteen metres above the city and
covers over thirty thousand square metres. It is like a small medieval
town within itself with several buildings, courtyards and squares.
Bastions with mighty towers were built at strategic points and together
with powerful gates they make the fortress near impregnable.
It is believed that during a siege the famous Salzburg Bull tricked the
city’s attackers into believing that the population had a good stock of
food!
Medieval Salzburg became a ‘German Rome’, an Italian looking city of
Early Baroque design. The Getreide-Gasse is the main street in the
centre of the city and in former times was called, Trabe-Gasse, a name
that demonstrates the fact that the people there were always in a hurry!
The city is a work of art within itself, an historic treasure chest of
timeless beauty, full of southern flair and joie de vivre. Salzburg is
most definitely a Baroque gem located in the very heart of Europe.

Salzkammergut - Travel Video.
DVD.
Vista Point. 26 Minutes.
The
Salzkammergut is located in the heart of
Austria.
A wonderful
and romantic landscape set between breathtaking mountains
and beautiful lakes.
In the Middle Ages St. Wolfgang was one of the most visited pilgrimage
destinations in Central Europe having attracted seventy thousand of the
faithful each year. In the summer of 1873 the first paddle-steamer was
introduced and the region eventually became famous due to an operetta,
Das Weisse Rössl Am Wolfgangsee.
The area’s main village is Fuschl that is situated on the Fuschlsee at
the western end of the Salzkammergut. A tranquil and romantic lake that
has inspired countless composers, poets and authors. The lake is a
glimmering turquoise colour and the surrounding landscape is truly
superb. It takes about three hours to walk around it.
Shaped like a sickle the Mondsee is situated between the Drachenwand and
Schafberg Mountains. The lake is eleven kilometres long and seventy
metres deep and has a relatively warm temperature due to its sheltered
location and lack of inlets from cold mountain rivers.
During the Ice Age a huge lime plate broke into two sections and created
the Dachstein Mountains and the Toten Gebirge. The Dachstein is a
fabulous world of imposing and majestic rock and ice.
Its remote location set between picturesque mountains and lakes is truly
captivating. A landscape of both history and culture the SALZKAMMERGUT a
veritable paradise in the heart of Europe!

Semmering
-
Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
The Semmering Railroad is a
remarkable alpine railway line that has been operating
in
Austria for a hundred and fifty years.
Construction of a railroad across mountain terrain posed a major problem
but the Semmering Mountain Railway that embarked from Payerbach overcame
all obstacles.
One of the most impressive architectural achievements of the railroad is
the two hundred and twenty seven metre long and twenty four metre high
Schwarza Viaduct.
The railway line to the Semmering Pass contains sixteen viaducts, more
than a hundred bridges and fifteen tunnels. A huge quantity of manpower
was used to create it with twenty thousand workers engaged to complete
the daunting task. However, the line was inaugurated after only six
years of construction.
Steam trains were eventually replaced by electric trains but the railway
itself has hardly changed at all and continues to form part of a
fascinating and irresistible combination of both technology and Nature.

Stift Klosterneuburg (Klosterneuburg Monastery)

10 Minutes.
Near to Vienna
is a place where the sky meets with the earth.
For
almost nine hundred years the Stift Klosterneuburg Monastery has had a
special relationship in the spiritual, sacred and cultural life of
Austria. Its architecture dates back to the Baroque era and the rule of
Emperor Karl The Sixth.
In the twelfth century, church architecture was based upon Italian
design. At that time a castle was also built at this location for the
sponsor of the monastery, Leopold The Pious. In addition to its fine
sacred architecture the Stift Klosterneuburg enchants due to its worldly
side that can be seen in the emperor’s private rooms which demonstrate
the luxurious lifestyle of the Habsburgers whose influence was at its
zenith during the reign of Karl The Sixth.
The monastery’s most valuable possession and also one of the most
impressive works of art of the Middle Ages is the Verduner Altar that
was named after the artist, Nikolaus Of Verdun, and was completed in
1181.
The large quantity of precious works of religious art and fascinating
historic objects that date from the Habsburger Dynasty underline the
feeling that the Stift Klosterneuburg is indeed a place where the sky
meets with the earth!

Cosmos Global Documentaries.
52 Minutes.
The Tyrol is made up
of untouched landscapes, idyllic mountain
villages and a magnificent
mountain world that makes this region that covers the west and southwest
of Austria and Northern Italy, a nature lover’s paradise.
The Tyrol also contains the Hohe Tauern National Park that extends for
more than eighteen hundred square kilometres and covers large sections
of the Eastern Alps and features a marvellous variety of natural
scenery. One of the most popular regions in the park is the Defreggental
and the pretty health resort of Sankt Veit.
The Southern Tyrol is in Italy at the edge of the Central Alps and south
of the Brenner Pass is one of the most important traffic routes in
Europe. With much less traffic than the Brenner but far more scenic is
the Strada Delle Dolomiti, a hundred kilometre long high Alpine road
that travels from Bozen to Cortina D´Ampezzo.
In the Ebbs Stud at the foot of the Kaisergebirge in the Austrian Tyrol
is a fine example of Tyrollean culture, the Haflinger breed of horses
that is friendly, strong and reliable and a cross between a Tyrollean
mountain mare and an Arab stallion.
Auffach is the starting point of one of the most spectacular journeys
into the mountain world of the Kitzbühler Alps. From the comfortable
panoramic cabins of the Schatzbergbahn there is a wonderful view across
the high Wildschönau Valley and surrounding mountains.
In contrast to other of the Tyrol’s cities, Innsbruck has the atmosphere
of a large city but it is also known for its historic charm. The city’s
unique landmark is an architectural masterpiece of Late Gothic design
that is called the Goldenes Dachl due to the three thousand gilded
copper tiles that cover the roof of its two storey oriel.

Europe and a region full of tradition and history. A veritable love

town with its pretty middle class buildings that date back to the
fifteenth century is a fine example of Austria’s country’s rural
architecture.
Around four thousand people live in the village of Wildschönau that is
situated in a fascinating valley of the Kitzbüheler Alps that extend for
some twenty four kilometres. Niederau is the entrance to the Wildschönau
region and Oberau is the main village in a valley that features eye
catching farm houses whose carved wooden balconies are decorated with
splendid flowers.
The Alpbach Tal leads into an untouched natural landscape where at an
altitude of nine hundred and seventy five metres above sea level is the
remote mountain village of Alpbach, the most beautiful village in the
Tyrol.
Kühtai is in the Stubaier Alps and can be reached from the Ötztal via
the Sellraintal that travels at an altitude of around two thousand
metres parallel to the Inntal.
Each season of the year this popular Alpine holiday region attracts
visitors from all over the world. The Tyrol is a "Land Of Mountains" and
a natural treasure in the very heart of Europe!

Wachau
- Travel Video. DVD.
Vista Point. 26 Minutes.
Our journey across
Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems,
one of the oldest
cultivated landscapes in
Austria.
The sole ‘Gateway Into The Wachau’ is a unique region of the Danube
between Krems-Stein and Melk. A total of a hundred and thirteen houses
encapsulate the medieval city that was built along the Steiner Road on
the banks of the Danube. Today the town’s facades and entrance-ways are
decorated in traditional style and compliment the impressive Renaissance
splendour of the buildings.
A little further on and the river valley narrows and becomes even more
beautiful. The blue-white church tower of Dürnstein proudly welcomes
those who visit the town. It is a landmark of the Wachau. This small
medieval town nestles picturesquely along the rock walls above the
Danube and it lives and breathes the history that made it world famous.
The beauty of the landscape is overwhelming. Colour dominates the soft
hollows between the rocky slopes that flank the Danube Valley and the
shining green of the summer months leads to a spectacle of colour that
leads up to the wine harvest, a true spectacle of nature!
Thirty-six kilometres of the Danube Valley with magnificent cities,
castles and historic ruins, a Baroque monastery and an old vine-growing
culture. The Wachau, a priceless gem situated alongside the
far-stretching waters of the Danube.

Wachau
-
Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
As with almost anywhere
within the Wachau, the clocks of the dreamy town of Stein
seem
to run a little slower than in other parts of Austria. Its well
preserved ensemble of old houses is not uncommon and the Wachau region
enjoys a good reputation for its fine historic treasures and elegant
buildings.
Krems is like a fairytale town. The wrought iron signs on its buildings
and its wonderful historic atmosphere are truly captivating. The former
stronghold and subsequent rival of Vienna contains several beautiful
lanes and imposing buildings that reflect the wealth of its former
citizens.
Amid the vast terraces of the Wachau vineyards is the village of
Weissenkirchen in which several hospitable inns provide their customers
with an ideal opportunity to sample the wines of this region.
Winegrowing has a long tradition in this section of the Danube and the
area between Krems and Melk is one of the oldest cultivated landscapes
in Austria.
The Wachau is a landscape full of warmth as well as being steeped in
history and age old traditions.
