River Road and The Natchez Trace Travel Video DVD. 55 Minutes.
Hosted by Tom Bodett.

Part #1: The River Road –
Before stern-wheeled steamboats, riverboat men relied on the Mississippi’s mighty current to propel their flat-bottomed boats to New Orleans.
The same strong currents made up-river travel impossible, so they walked or rode back to Natchez along the River Road.
Tom revisits the favorite New Orleans vice dens of the rowdy boatmen, and tramps through the alligator-infested swamps crossed by River Road.

Part #2: The Natchez Trace was the second leg of the riverboat men’s journey home to Nashville.
Tom tells the stories of the infamous land pirates who preyed on unwary travelers, and the mysterious death of Meriwether Lewis at Grinder’s Stand. He also visits Cypress Swamp, Indian burial grounds, the Civil War battleground at Franklin, Tennessee, and Belle Meade Plantation at trail’s end in Nashville.

America's Mysterious Places - Travel Video.  2 Volume Set.  VHS.

"The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science." -Albert Einstein, 1934

Here is the definitive documentary investigation of America's most extraordinary historical sites.  World renowned experts trace the facts and the myths of America's most famous unexplained mysteries. From the strange apparitions of tombstone, to the haunting tale of Salem, Massachusetts, to the amazing sculpture of Coral Castle, you will explore the otherworldly mysteries that continue to captivate Americans.

VOLUME 1

The Witches of Salem

Why was Salem the site of the world's most infamous with trials? How were witches "proven guilty?"  Why is the town's food supply of crucial importance to one new theory?

The Ghosts of Tombstone
A famous silver boomtown of the Old West, Tombstone is also the site of some of the world's most notorious haunted places - from the Bird Cage theatre's "ghostly manifestations", to the strange phantasm in Big Nose Kate's Saloon.  Why does this town continue to attract "spirit photographers", psychics - and the plain curious?

The Mystery of Coral Castle

One of the world's most bizarre structures, this 1,000-ton 'castle' was sculpted out of coral rock.  Incredibly, it was constructed by just one man! Who was he and how did he quarry, haul and carve on such a grand scale - alone and unobserved?

VOLUME 2

Chaco Canyon: Secrets of the Anasazi
A curious canyon in New Mexico holds secrets of North America's first "civilization". Who lived here almost a thousand years ago?  Where did the people go?  What was Pueblo Bonito - and who built it?

America's Stonehenge?

Known variously as "Mystery Hill" and "America's Stonehenge".  Did the Celts build this strange site?  Or was it ancient Native Americans?  Was it an observatory, as some suggest? A shrine?  Or was it used for another, darker purpose: human sacrifice?

Stories in Stone: Petroglyphs of the Southwest

In the Rio Grande Valley of the Southwest we find startling etchings carved into stone.  Who were the ancient Americans that created them?  Will we ever decipher the meaning of their stories in stone?

Love Those Trains - Travel Video.  VHS.  National Geographic Video.

From riding the rails atop a luggage rack through the mountains of Ecuador to enjoying a gourmet meal aboard the Lalique-laden Orient Express, this potpourri of train travel is bound to satisfy train buffs.  The 57-minute National Geographic video opens with a segment on riding and working on old steam engines.  There's a visit to a Montecito, California, property where grownups sit in miniature steam-engine cars and ride a mile-long track.  Later, narrator James Whitmore takes viewers to Iowa to a celebration honoring hobos, especially the Hobo King, who calls himself "Steamboat."
Then it's on to the notorious Donner Pass, where locomotives face the same trying weather conditions that vanquished most of the Donner party so long ago.  In between stories, there's lots of black-and-white photographs and footage of early steam engines, the building of the railroad, and early travel.  Viewers are treated to some of the more remarkable views in U.S. train travel as the engines make their way up steep inclines of the Rockies, pass unusual rock formations in the Southwest, or negotiate perilous stretches in crime-ridden urban areas.  57 minutes
