Robert Flaherty's documentary NANOOK OF THE NORTH, about the Inuit people who lived off the frigid landscape of the Arctic North, is a seminal work of film history.
In GREAT NORTH, produced for the massive IMAX screen, Nanook's very own grandson serves as narrator, taking viewers through the rich, white majesty of the setting in which he and his people still live.
Along with doing justice to the breathtaking and awesome landscape of the freezing, snow-covered environment, GREAT NORTH also looks into the long-standing traditions, such as fishing and hunting, of the Inuit tribes.

Giant Bears of Kodiak Island - Travel Video - VHS.  National Geographic.  Follow the largest carnivore that walks the earth, the great Kodiak bear, down ancient feeding trails, up salmon-rich rivers - even into a den where a mother nurses her newborn cubs.  You'll watch cubs learning to fish, bears gorging in berry-laden fields, and a remarkable scene of bears consuming a beached whale carcass.

The setting is Alaska's Kodiak Island, where 4,000-foot mountains rise from hundreds of miles of jagged coastline.  Today about 2,700 of these larger cousins of the well-known grizzly bear still thrive there.  But change looms on the horizon.  Portions of the island are open to development.  Dramatic home videos of dangerous tourist/bear encounters capture the uneasy clashes of Kodiak's modern and natural worlds.  Enjoy this rare look into the lives.

In this 1992 National Geographic video depicting the giant bears of Kodiak Island, photographer Wolfgang Bayer gets up close and demonstrates that the normally feared animal has a gentler side.  Taking viewers through the rituals of the bear's daily life, this documentary shows the black Kodiak bear as primarily a creature of habit and survival, and we witness the hulking carnivores in a more humane light.

The island and its people are torn between their own survival and the continued existence of the big black bear.  Part way through the video, we meet a graduate student visiting his hometown, and through his studies, we learn more about the people of Kodiak Island and an animal that is normally feared.  While this film is well worth watching as a source of information and entertainment, it tends to leave the viewer asking more questions about the fate of the bears on the island.  60 minutes
