AFRICA Colours Of The Dark Continent - Travel Video - DVD Cosmos Global Documentaries.  52 Minutes.
Africa’s culture has been enriched by the proud and famous Massai, a noble tribe of herdsmen and the spacious plains of Kenya and Tanzania are their homeland.

As the Massai did not tolerate foreign hunters, the area of Amboseli at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro has in the main been spared from poachers. Much of the summit of the huge mountain is covered by cloud and at nearly six thousand metres above sea level it is Africa’s highest mountain.

Tens of thousands of flamingos transform Lake Bogoria into a colourful spectacle and its many geysers give the landscape an air of mystique, the hot springs highlighting the enormous energy that lies beneath the earth’s surface.

Located at the southern tip of Africa, South Africa is surrounded by two oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian. Both the country and its inhabitants are in many ways remarkable and the cultural variety of several ethnic communities has been well maintained.

The Kalahari in Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated areas in the world yet it has been inhabited for thousands of years: its Bushmen are proud of their long history. The San are a tribe of hunter gatherers who continue to use their extraordinary knowledge of nature right up to the present day.

Just off the Tanzanian coast is the legendary island of Zanzibar once feared because of pirates but at the same time appreciated for its marvellous spices and in the ancient town of Stone Town several buildings have been restored and now shine out once again in all of their historic glory.

Africa, the Dark Continent - but with all the fascinating colours of the rainbow!

Gorilla - Travel Video - DVD Cosmos Global Documentaries.  52 Minutes.
The Congo contains some of the most fascinating natural wildlife habitats in
Africa. This fascinating country is home to a remarkable creature, the Mountain Gorilla. Our destination is the Virunga National Park that extends along the borders of the Congo, Uganda and Rwanda.

Close to the border with Uganda is the village of Goma that contains several dwellings and a good market that displays an amazing variety of exotic fruit. After a short but very welcome break the journey continues in a four-wheel drive minibus but this does not last very long as it soon becomes necessary to travel by foot, a daunting prospect but also one inspired by the possibility of spotting the rare Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat on a journey that will take around two days.

The excitement continues to mount as a tree, or even a bush, could suddenly reveal one of the region’s remarkable Mountain Gorillas. Suddenly from behind a bush the first one appears!

Unlike their reputation of old, these mighty creatures are far from aggressive and Man originally thought of these animals as highly dangerous and unpredictable. However recent studies have proven that this is untrue and that the gorilla is an exceptionally peace loving creature.

Even today the precise size of the gorilla population is not known. However, it is believed that around three hundred and eighty Mountain Gorillas inhabit the protected region of the Virunga Mountains.

Various sounds such as screaming, whimpering, barking and grunting play an important if not vital role in the daily communication of the gorilla as the various members of a group may not see each other for much of the time. By communicating in this way they learn of the mood and current whereabouts of the other members of the group. On average an adult utters around eight sounds an hour.

Due to constant supervision and strict policing these fascinating creatures that were until quite recently threatened with extinction, have managed to survive to the present day. Long may this continue!

Untamed Africa - Travel Video - VHS.  Questar Video.  2-Video Slipcase Set.  John Hurt narrates this remarkable two volume account of one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles in the world - The Great Migration - a 700 mile test of survival for millions of animals across terrain as treacherous as it is beautiful...the African savannah.

Vol.1: The Great Migration Begins

In search of fresh grazing, one million wildebeests and 750,000 zebras strike out toward the fertile Masai Mara in Kenya.  Their migration is a 700 mile gauntlet of hungry lions and crocodiles, parching heat and devastating wildfires. As the great herds file past, the challenges facing giraffes, rhinoceroses, ostriches and elephant are also related.

Vol.2: Survival On The Savannah

The amazing saga continues as the wildebeests turn south towards the Serengeti, where they will give birth to over 200,000 calves.  But first, perilous crossings of the predator-filled Mara and Sand Rivers must be made.  Along the southward trek, we see young crocodiles hatching and the survival lessons of young lions, topi, baboons, wildebeest and ostriches.  128 minutes.

African Wildlife - Travel Video - VHS.  National Geographic.

Witness the realities of birth, death and survival in this vivid encounter with the animal world.  "African Wildlife" was filmed in Namibia's Etosha National Park over the course of two years, capturing extraordinary close-ups of animal behavior: a wildebeest giving birth, a zebra mother successfully defending her foal from the swift attack of a cheetah, and a young springbuck alerting his herd to the presence of a predator with stiff-legged leaps.

Includes gorgeously spectacular nature footage, much of it shot at shockingly close range.  This video takes a relaxed look at a wide selection of wildlife, including zebras, cheetahs, wildebeest, lions, and elephants.  The goal is to show all facets of animal life, and scenes of violent encounters between species are balanced with touching scenes of young animals at play.

In one stunning sequence, a wildebeest is shown giving birth.  Her calf soon stands and takes his first wobbly steps, the informative narration noting that by the end of the day he'll "be running with the herd."  Rare footage of a lioness teaching her cubs to finish off a wild pig she has wounded is riveting, as it shows graphically how the lioness will not assist so that her cubs, clumsy though they are, will learn to kill on their own.

This video would be worth watching just for the exquisite cinematography, but its thoughtful organization and intelligent narration make it both a visual treat and an education in how animals really live on the African plains.  60 minutes
