emblem...masterful," this fascinating program takes an unprecedented
look at the eagle's triumphant comeback from the brink of extinction,

takes charge of rebuilding the clan on the edge
of the valley. With a new generation thriving, he leads the Druids back
to battle the rival Slough pack! Filmed in high-definition.
"Epic...spectacular beauty."-The New York Times
Disc 3:
Pale Male -
Of the millions of newcomers who flock to New York City, a red-tailed
hawk’s astounding arrival in 1991 made history. No other red-tailed hawk
had ever attempted to make Manhattan his territory. Affectionately
dubbed Pale Male, he made an exclusive Fifth Avenue apartment building
his home. Pale Male became an instant celebrity who made New Yorkers’
hearts and imaginations soar. Oscar-winner Joanne Woodward narrates this
award-winning presentation of the Emmy-honored PBS series, NATURE. Join
the close-knit community of bird-watchers who faithfully gather daily to
follow the progress of this exquisite, powerful bird of prey as he hunts
Central Park’s wild creatures, courts his mate on Woody Allen’s balcony,
builds a penthouse nest, fiercely protects his family from attacking
crows, and encourages his baby chicks to fly. Pale Male and his family
become a magnificent obsession for the captivated crowds below. To the
regulars on the beach, it’s better than Broadway. And so is this very
special program that the Audubon Society has proclaimed “a classic.”
Disc 4:
Extreme Lands of the Americas - Program 1:
Andes, The Dragon's Back - With glaciers, volcanoes, snow-capped peaks,
enormous deserts, tropical rainforests, caustic salt pans, and cloud
forests, the Andes are an extraordinary world of diverse terrains,
extreme temperatures, and a staggering array of wildlife. Five thousand
miles long and extending over seven countries, this high mountain range
boasts some of the highest, saltiest, wettest and driest terrains on the
planet. But in a land full of secrets, the creatures truly set the Andes
apart from all other places on Earth. Penguins, Oposums, hummingbirds,
llamas, pumas, foxes, condors, spectacled bears and such unexpected
creatures as the pudu, the world's smallest deer, have all managed to
thrive in almost impossible places. Academy Award-winner F. Murray
Abraham narrates. Program 2: Life in Death Valley - The name, Death
Valley, conjures dread. It is the hottest, driest place in North
America. But this is no typical desert. Nowhere else is a land so
exquisite in its beauty, yet brutal in its extremes. Here, the rule is
simple-adapt or perish. Witness how fascinating desert dwellers
ingeniously outwit Mother Nature in their quest to survive. Discover
Death Valley's many faces and secret places, including an astonishing
subterranean water world where dwells a species of fish that dates back
to the Ice Age. Meet participants in the most grueling footrace on the
planet, the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon. Death Valley's mystique and
majesty come alive in this astonishing program. Anthony LaPaglia
narrates.
Disc 5:
Program 1: Cloud, Wild Stallion of the Rockies -
Cloud is a wild horse of a different color--almost pure white. And his
regal bearing and feisty personality make him stand out all the more.
From the day of his birth in the Rockies, he so enthralled Ginger
Kathrens that she began to follow his story, filming him and his fellow
wild horses of the Arrowhead Mountains over the course of seven years.
But in the highly competitive "culture" of wild horses, was Cloud
capable of becoming the great band stallion she expected he could be?
This first of two films documents the challenges he faces on the way to
maturity. He is captured in a government round up and released without
his family, and battles with other stallions to win a family of his own.
This remarkable program sheds light on the rarely seen complexities of
wild horse society, especially its strong need for family in an
unpredictable world. Program 2: Cloud's Legacy, The Wild Stallion
Returns - Is there a beautiful new Cloud on the horizon? In this second
film, Ginger Kathrens unveils the next two years of her Cloud
chronicles. Cloud is now a band stallion, with a family to care for. A
new chapter of his life begins. Now, he is a father with two sons. The
one he will raise is not of his blood. The other is Cloud's spitting
image, but will never know him as a father. Yet Cloud's legacy is more
than the passage of his genes, from father to son. He will also pass on
all he has learned in the mountains to become a band stallion. His
adopted son will profit from Cloud's skills as a protector, leader, and
caretaker. And that may one day count for more than blood. But will the
family survive the hazards of their environment--drought, storms,
lightning, fire? You will not rest until you have seen this poignantly
powerful tale of nature at its wildest.
Disc 6:
Animals Gone Wild - Program 1:
Animals Behaving Badly - As they search for territory and shelter, food
and water, untamed animals are in our cars, our yards, our homes, and in
our face. Animals Behaving Badly explores the ever-escalating battle for
space between animals and humans. Program 2: The Good, the Bad, and the
Grizzly - In The Good, the Bad, and the Grizzly, America's greatest
predator struggles on in a modern frontier. Meet the homeowners who find
themselves under siege from foraging grizzlies, the ranchers whose
livestock is at peril, and wildlife managers charged with keeping the
peace between bears and humans.

The Eruption of St. Mount Helens
- Nature Video -
DVD. Large format.
The Eruption of Mount St.
Helens!" chronicles the cataclysmic events during one of America's most
famous natural disasters, capturing the dramatic primary and secondary
eruptions that began on Sunday, May 18, 1980 at 8:32 A.M. When the
destruction was over, the once beautiful symmetrical cone rising 9,667
feet above sea level had lost over 8.8
billion cubic yards of ice, rock
and dirt, decreasing its height by 1,300 feet.
Originally
shot in the IMAX format, this film includes footage from the rescue
helicopters that combed the area looking for survivors after the initial
eruption. These amazing scenes reveal an unearthly landscape of
mud, ash, and steaming craters, which sharply contrasts with the
pre-eruption scenery of pristine snow-covered peaks and the crystal
waters of Spirit Lake.
As the film revisits
the area a decade later, it is startling to see the rapid recovery after
so much devastation. In this celebration of nature, "The Eruption
of Mount St. Helens!" explores the power of nature to destroy, and to
heal, in a cycle of destruction and creation that constantly changes the
world in which we live.
Commentary --
This documentary on the May
1980 eruption of Washington's Mount St. Helens volcano does a fine job
of explaining why the mountain exploded, but what distinguishes this
production is its spectacular cinematography. Originally shown in
IMAX theaters, this film presents highly detailed and lavish views of
the gorgeous scenery of the Pacific Northwest, both as they appeared
before the top 1,300 feet of Mount St. Helens was blown into the sky and
during the disaster's dramatic aftermath. When the first eruption
occurred on the morning of May 18, 1980, the entire region was showered
with gray ash, and the footage of towns that took on a wintry appearance
in the springtime is truly eerie. For weeks after the mountain
blew, it created its own unstable weather system, but when the clouds
finally cleared and camera crews could fly near the volcano, the footage
they brought back was stunning. Shots of what had been wooded
mountainsides made utterly desolate are terrifying, and they dramatize
how powerful and deadly a volcano can be. More recent footage
showing the landscape after it recovered is inspiring and reassuring,
and this film, which was nominated for an Academy Award, will leave
viewers in awe of both the beauty and violent fury of Mount St. Helens.

Croatia
lies a hidden treasure--Plitvice Lakes National
Park. This extraordinary natural preserve is a fairy tale world that has
lain undisturbed for centuries.
That is, until Civil War tore the Balkans apart a decade ago. But,
Plitvice
has an almost supernatural ability to regenerate and heal
itself. The restless landscape is constantly in motion,
continually
building new waterfalls and pools, merging its elements to create a
place like no other.
In this spellbinding episode from the award-winning PBS series,
witness the savagery and splendor of nature that has created a kingdom
formed, and ruled, by water. Here, one of the continent's largest
population of brown bears, packs of wolves and lynx, and a host of other
rare and remarkable creatures that have all but disappeared elsewhere,
seek safe haven.
Each season brings its own unique beauty to one of the
last
ancient European forests
and an unparalleled world of crystal-clear lakes that flow into one
another through a series of spectacular terraces and
cascading
waterfalls.
It is a land of wonders.
Program 2: Ireland
- From its ocean
shores and wooded glens to its isolated mountains, Ireland's
breathtaking landscapes seem untouched by time.
Narrated by Jason O'Mara, this enchanting episode from public
television's honored natural history series etches a vivid portrait of
the Emerald Isle, graced with a host of
plants and animals that thrive
in one of the most varied landscapes in Europe.
Rare native flowers, colonies of sea birds, dolphins and peregrine
falcons, and the legendary racehorses of the Irish National Stud are
only part of Ireland's fascinating story. Ireland's timeless beauty has
survived the ages.
But, what is old to us is still young to the land, which has been
transformed again and again. Sheathed in ice; sculpted by retreating
glaciers; covered in vast
forests of oak;
reshaped by human history; Ireland's story is still unfolding.

Kilauea, Mountain of Fire
- Nature Video - DVD.
110 Minutes.

Kilauea continually
molds Hawaii's Big Island. Creating new land, shaping ancient forests
and carving tunnels through the earth, the volcano fascinates a
dedicated group of scientists and filmmakers who follow its every
action. Ejecting fire, molten rock, giant boulders and poisonous gases,
the volcano can be a hazard for researchers, homeowners, plants and
animals, but it does not just leave destruction in its wake. Twists and
turns in the lava's flow leave some patches of original ecosystems,
called kipukas, undisturbed. These oases of life provide a haven to many
rare creatures--including the Hawaiian state bird, the Nene--but remain
in constant danger from the volcano and from invasive species. At the
end of its journey, the lava meets the ocean. Braving an extremely hot
sea, filmmakers record the birth of new land. Violent and beautiful,
destructive and creative, Kilauea: Mountain of Fire explores the
incredible power of the volcano and the challenges of life in its
shadow.

Deep Sea
- Nature Video - DVD.
41
Minutes.
The wondrous denizens
of the diverse marine habitat known as a coral reef are the subject
matter of Howard Hill's DEEP SEA 3-D (originally an IMAX presentation).
Exploring the reefs throughout the Pacific, Hill's cameras capture a
rare close-up glimpse of turtles, shrimp, scallops, sharks, eels,
starfish, jellyfish, octopuses, and much more. Thematically, the film
examines the balance of life and symbiosis between these creatures.
There are the hunters and the hunted, yet there is always another
species that keeps the hunters in check, too. Similarly, some species of
smaller fish eat by feeding on sea material that collects on some larger
fish, which also cleans the larger fish's scales. The continued and
necessary persistence of this activity is quite important to the
collective survival of the animals, the reef and, indeed, all of
humanity.
Narrated almost conversationally by Johnny Depp and Kate
Winslet, DEEP SEA 3-D is a thrilling, intimate, and educational look at
the unknown depths of the world underwater; enjoyable for kids and
adults of any age.

Into The Living Sea - Travel Video -
DVD.
IMAX Video Productions.
The Living Sea takes
you to the world's oceans, traveling to Palau, Hawaii, California, Oregon,
Alaska, Nova Scotia and the Red Sea. Explore the mysterious depths
and come face to face with life-sized humpback whales when you dive into
"The Living Sea." Swim with
thousands
of golden jellyfish and witness the bizarre spawning behavior of giant
clams. Surf in Hawaii, deep-sea dive in Palau and test your courage
with the Coast Guard in some of the world's roughest seas! Follow a
remotely operated vehicle 3,000 feet down through the ocean depths to view
strange creatures (one as long as a football field!) which live where
sunlight never penetrates. "The Living Sea" celebrates the "world
ocean"--its beauty, diversity and importance to all life on earth. Music
by Sting; narrated by Meryl Streep. Ever wonder "how did they do
that?" "The Making of 'The Living Sea'", shot in High-Definition Video,
takes you behind the scenes. 117 minutes
REVIEW: The films from IMAX
have come to be known for their cutting-edge cinematography. They don't
disappoint with The Living Sea, an Academy Award-nominated documentary
exploring exotic marine locales. Using dizzying aerial and time-lapse
footage, they provide underwater imagery usually accessible only while
wearing fins and a mask. From heavy-surf Coast Guard drills off the coast
of Oregon to jellyfish in Palau to North Atlantic humpback whales, veteran
IMAX cameraman and director Greg MacGillivray takes viewers on a vivid
journey into some of the world's most breathtaking environments and shows
us some of the rarest and strangest marine life. Ten years from conception
to finished product, this documentary's intended message is the importance
of protecting the "world ocean" by displaying its wild beauty and
diversity.
The Living Sea does an
excellent job showcasing the more visually satisfying aspects of the sea
(standout footage includes schools of jellyfish performing a graceful
migratory dance and a giant cuttlefish changing brilliant colors for the
purpose of camouflage), although ultimately it fails to shed much light on
the hows, whys, and urgency of marine conservation. However, despite the
short running time (unfortunately characteristic of IMAX productions) and
a soundtrack that only true Sting fans will fully appreciate, this film
proves to be a remarkable treat for the eyes and is sure to elicit
heartfelt oohs and aahs from anyone who loves the sea.
